 Post subject: Streetcar at VMT

I hope this works. I found the below photo on ABPR, apparently taken in June 2000. It shows a streetcar body, some sort of double-truck steel car, at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. I visited VMT in June 2001 and didn't see this car; does anyone know its identity or what happened to it?

I'm having too much fun with ABPR. Below is a link to a photo taken at Nevada State RR Museum, Carson City in 2000. It's the body of a steel arch-roof car that looks a LOT like an interurban. Does anyone know what this thing is? Thanks!

Frank,

That is a Hall-Scott motor car body that the NSRM acquired at the same it it was given the McKeen car body. Hall-Scott was a California company that also built steel interurban trailers for a predecessor of the Sacramento Northern. The particular body that NSRM has was one of three motor car built for the Salt Lake & Utah for use prior to its completion as a electric inturban. This car then went to the Nevada Copper Belt. Last use prior to going to the museum was (along with the McKeen car) as part of a hardware and/or plumbing store.

A former Nevada Copper Belt wood-bodied Hall-Scott is still in existance. I'm not sure where it is now, but it may be at the California State RR Museum.

And yes, Hall-Scott is the same firm that made automotive and aircraft engines.

Frank, Al's Plumbing had two car bodies. The famous and unique V&T 22, the Mc Keen Motor car.

And the V&T 99 a gas mechanical interurban type passenger car. I don't have my notes but I recall that she was built in the San Francisco or Berkeley by the Holman or the Berkeley Motor Car Company.

There is a similar car at the CA RR Museum which is complete with its 1920s gas engine. She is I think Nevada Copperbelt 21

At the Western Railway Museum we have two more of these cars built for the Oakland, Antiock & Eastern as 1019 and 1020. The 1020 is now restored as the O,A&E 1019 trailer she originally was.

In the future the 1019 will be restored as a Sacramento Northern motor.

Those are the only carss by the builder that I know of.

"The gas powered motorcar that became Tonopah & Goldfield, and later Virginia & Truckee No. 99 was one of many built for different railroads on White truck chassis by various coach body builders around the country, including several in San Francisco and Sacramento, California. The 22 seat body for No. 99 was built on a 2 ton White chassis by the San Francisco firm of Thomson-Graf-Elder in 1921 for the Tonopah & Goldfield. The T&G had purchased the car for service during the Divide boom, which did not last.

In 1926, the T&G offered the little-used motorcar for sale. The Virginia & Truckee was looking for a new car to supplement their No. 23, a car built in 1917 by Thomson-Graf-Elder on a 1 1/2 ton White chassis. T&G No. 99 fit the bill, and the V&T purchased the car for $3,400. The car traveled from Tonopah to Carson City in the care of Assistant Master Mechanic Ed Peterson, who in 1910 had delivered the McKeen car to the V&T. Repainted in the V&T's yellow color scheme, the new car remained No. 99.

Motorcars Nos. 23 and 99 operated on several runs, including Reno to Minden. Their last service was to Virginia City, which ended with the abandonment of that line in 1938. They were officially retired in 1941, and the body of No. 99 was sold to become part of a building in Virginia City. The body was saved by Graham Hardy, who gave it to the Nevada Heritage Association in 1964. Stored outdoors until 1978, little remained but the wooden framework. Transferred to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in 1980, and the subject of a full restoration feasibility study in 1983, the remaining body was demolished by a wind storm in 1985. The few remaining pieces are being preserved by the Railroad Museum."

Well they are of course right these cars are by Hall scott. I don't know what I was thinking about.

Once again it proves that you should check the library before posting anything.

I believe the car in the photo is a Richmond, VA body stored somewhere in that city. There have been some attempts to start a heritage service in Richmond over the years. This project is not part of any VMT effort. The body may be part of the collections of the Old Dominion Chapter NRHS, but it is not listed on their website.

If I recall correctly, the streetcar body pictured is a former Roanoke Railway & Electric Co. car that had been in use as part of a cabin or home in the Hanging Rock area of Roanoke County. I think it was situated not far from the former right-of-way of the Norfolk & Western Catawba Branch, prior to being truncated at Hanging Rock.
