 Post subject: Hiawathas?
PostPosted: Fri Nov 22, 2002 10:23 am

I’ve searched the available posts on this board for “Hiawatha” and can find no apparent reference to any existing remnants of this venerable Milwaukee train. A friend says he heard many years ago that one of the 4-4-2 locomotives stood in a city park in Milwaukee. Does anyone know of this or any other existing Hiawatha 4-4-2 engines and/or cars?

I can positively state that none of the streamlined steam locomotives built for the "Hiawathas" survived. All were scrapped.

I am not so sure about the coaches; I will let our rolling stock experts try to help you.

No Hiawatha 4-4-2s survived. In fact, I can only find reference to five surviving Milwaukee Raod steam engines on Wes' Barris' list; here's a link:

As for Hiawatha passenger cars that's a different question and well above my expertise. We might want to start by narrowing down the definition: do you mean only the 1st, original streamlined Hiawatha trainset that debuted with the 4-4-2s; do you mean any of the later trainsets in the same service, hauled by 4-4-2s or 4-6-4s; or do your mean cars from any trainset which bore one or more versions of the Hiawatha name, for example, the Olympian Hiawatha to the west coast?

There is at least the remnants of one nearly "original" Hiawatha coach actually still in service. The 1938 Beavertail Obs. lounge "Earling" still exists, although barely recognizable, as the tool car "Earling" which can be seen in almost any video tape of the Milw. 261 rolling just behind the locomotive, and aux. tender.

Are we sure there isn't at least on Milwaukee Atlantic left? Model Railroader had a story on found in an engine shed back in the 1980s...

A Hiawatha Dorm Coach still exists. The car is stored in the old Rock Island yard in Fairfield, Iowa. It's for sale by Rail Merchants International. Supposedly RMI is doing restoration work on the car also. See link for photo:

I remember that article in Model Railroader; as I recall it was a hypothetical story (not true) used as a premise for them resurrecting a Milwaukee Hiawatha steam locomotive to power a fictitious special train as a tribute to Model Railroader celebrating their 50th (?) anniversary. The story was only fiction, no Hiawatha shrouded steam survived. I did hear however, that a tender from one of the 4-4-2's survives due to it being used in work train service on the Milwaukee after the engine was scrapped.....

I know Dan, hence the ";)" at the end of my posting. Certainly was a great article though.
