 Post subject: In Search of Pullman Sleeper "Fir Park"

I am trying to track down the current location of ex-Pullman 6sec4rmtDBR sleeping car "Fir Park". It was rebuilt from (10-2) ex-"Point Barrow", and was briefly stored on the Strasburg RR in 1968. It was then sent to Rehobeth Beach, DE, but I lost track after that.

Clues, anybody?

About 4-5 years ago Rev. Herman Page, then secretatry of the Topeka Chapter NRHS, was putting togeather a list of all existing heavyweight Pullmans. I'll try to find one of his lists that I got at the time. By the time he finished he had work equipment that had once been Pullman cars on his list.

That would be a most interesting list to see since we have still had no luck tracing our ex-pullman/NKP/NW/NS/WLE car. All we know about it is that is was a sleeper built before air conditioning with no added roof ducts.

The list was made up from reports received and cars visited, etc.

All of the HW Pullman sleepers were originally built prior to air conditioning. How intact is your car, was it in M/W service?

What you might try doing is removing a window sash and looking at the stamping on the edge of the frame. If the Pullman Company made the sash it would have the name of the car and a sequence number to identify the location in the car. This was done so that the sash could be removed for refinishing, etc. and returned to the correct car in the correct place.

The inside sash of the double sash will come out from the inside by unscrewing the molding. Don't loose the screws if at all possible, especially if they are oval head screws (these look like a flat-head with a curved top). These seem to be hard to get.

The list is interesting in that it attempts to cover any car that traced its lineage to a HW Pullman car, inlcuding those that were stripped to the frame and converted into coaches and baggage cars (something the Southern Railway did a lot of). I am aware of some of these cars that are missing from the list. There are probably others as well.

Every now and then I post to rypn with the suggestion that anyone needing this type of information contact the Pullman Library at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. We can give you a lot number listing for the original Pullman customer to assist you in locating your particular car. Since Pullman had the policy of stamping the lot number or car name in out-of-the way places such as inside a cabinet or on parts for instance window sashes on the outside edge, this is a relatively unambiguous way of identifying a particular car, subject to the usual uncertainties of rebuilds from sister cars. From this, we can determine what we have in the the way of specifications, drawings, and late-model photos. In addition, the Newberry Library in Chicago has car service record cards (approximate name, and which I have yet to research) giving the service life of the car as it is brought in to the Pullman Company for rebuilds or service. So, for that lot number information just drop us a line at:
