Les,

Very interesting. So does the car still have the steps in the well? It hard to tell from the pics on the ole web.

Ours has the old tiles but they are all toast.

Bill -

The steps are gone from both sides. As for the tiles in our car, I think the false floor put in by the Wabash, or possibly N&W, protected those Pullman installed tiles. There are some issues, but overall, they are satisfactory for its current use as a display car.

That's what I have found in my reaearch as well. I reread Les' post and see where the steps on theirs were removed along with the well. That explains why it looks like a later car. Elgin County's looks like a later car and the steamtown car is tough to tell. I see the ladder but cant tell if there is a step well hiding behind it.

Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum has two troop sleepers and a troop kitchen car in various states of preservation.

If those cars have original or even '50's-era floor tiles, be aware of the dreaded "A" word.

From experience with a construction project at church, 9x9-inch A tiles are ok if left where they are and kept sealed with a standard floor coating. Our vintage 1950s education building is full of them. Just no buffing please with an abrasive pad to create dust. Disposal is another matter when doing construction or making repairs that require tiles to be removed. Even then we had a contractor who could handle the job for us under regs without a big hassle.

One that might slip through a tally is this one at New Buffalo, Michigan:

Looking a bit ragged back in 2009 when the photo was posted. Not sure what she looks like today.

There are also two at IRM, carried on the roster as Defense Plant Corporation 7271 (exterior restored) and Elgin Joliet & Eastern 8726.

Since this thread seems to be morphing into a discussion of preserved Pullman Troop Sleepers, thought I'd include this photo:

http://rr-fallenflags.org/eje/eje8731amr.jpg

This car is at the railroad museum in Griffith, Indiana. Note that the "J" blanked out the original windows and put a sliding door in the car when it was assigned to Maintenance-of-Way work. Since this photo was taken, the museum has repainted the car with Pullman Green paint and lettered it with the authentic PULLMAN on the letterboard and TROOP SLEEPER on either side of the blanked out door. However no other work was done. Leaving the question as to whether the car should have been left in its EJ&E orange MofW paint scheme or if the change hinting its original use as a Pullman car, makes more sense.

We were finally able to determine the car number this evening via scratching paint and looking very carefully, with the help of the sun, at where L&N painted over or tried to grind off the C&EI numbers and lettering. The only thing found on the center sill at this point is INLAND embossed in the steel.

The car is:

DPC/Pullman 7118, C&EI A-1147, L&N 43573

Bill -

Great! Maybe someone has a photo of the car as C&EI A-1147.
