In doing research on the Carroll Park and Western Railroad I've been trying to identify the prototype used for the Deadwood Flats Station (pic attached). In a 1964 brochure (pic attacehd) it says it was built using plans from the C&NW. I've contacted the C&NW Historical Society about this and they replied back that is is too ornate and does not resemble anything the C&NW had. So my question is, what prototype was it built after? Does anyone have a photo of a similar looking station?

Although the building no longer sits on its original raised platform and the wood structure is sheathed in corrugated metal, it still exhibits many of the character defining features of its original appearance. A simple, single‐story, gable roofed building, the deep roof overhang, roof brackets and stick style gable braces are still in
place. The bay window which originally allowed the agent or operator a clear view of the tracks is also still evident. When the Passenger (Modern) Depot was constructed, this building continued to be used as the freight depot. The building is currently being used for storage by Carhart Lumber.

Putting the address in Google maps shows the building might be a match if it has been added onto.

Uhhh, so which came first? The CP&W depot or the Revell Small Town Station?

The extant ex-C&NW depot in Wayne, now a restaurant, doesn't match one iota.

You are looking at the wrong station. The restaurant is in the brick replacement depot that was built in 1912. The possible prototype depot from 1883 is the now metal encased building that says Carhart Lumber No. 4.

Even if he copied the Revell kit (quite possible) where did THEY come up with the design? Sure, model railroaders can, and do, invent things from nothing, but often model kits are compressed versions of actual structures, so they have an authentic feel about them.

Thanks for the info everyone. The CP&W station sure does resemble the Revell Kit. It would make sence as the station was built sometime between 1961 and 1963. The Carhart Lumber building looks more like a freight station to me where as the CP&W looks morelike a combination station. Anyone else have any ideas to it's prototype.

Oh yeah, incase anyone is wondering why I have all the CP&W questions, it's becasue I am in the process of writting a book about the CP&W.

Still doesn't work. Too large, wrong roof pitch.... remember, they allegedly used "plans" for this supposed station.

A cursory flip through my numerous RR station books suggests that the Revell kit is simply a "selectively compressed" fantasy of what a "small town station" should look like. The lack of decent freight space suggests a commuter station on the New York (Erie, Lackawanna, CNJ, etc.) or Chicago commuter districts dating from the 1880s.

I'm going to have to find one of those old Revell Kits and build it and paint it yellow and chocolate brown like the CP&W station orginally was.

Here is a comparison of the front of the CP&W station and the Revell kit.

For me, one of the the defining characteristics of the Revell kit and the CP&W depot is the coupola above the bay window. I've seen photos of C&NW depots like this. For example, the C&NW depot in Iron Mountain, MI:

The other defining characteristic is the "porch-like" overhang on the front of the building.

I've seen photos of at least one C&NW depot that contained both elements, thus closely approximating the Revell kit and the CP&W depot. There's also an article in an older issue of Model Railroader on how to build one. Perhaps someone with the DVD can find it. The model built for the article now resides on a C&NW layout in the Chicago area.

So, who owns the depot and water tower now? I still can't get over that both are still sitting there...

It is true that the C&NW had more than a few depots "similar" to Deadwood Flats. The low turret over the ticket booth is prevalent in depots from MI to the Dakotas on the C&NW. At some point the CP&W depot was attributed to a StJ&H (CB&Q design). The Q also had depots with turrets like that. Seems like a common feature across many roads.

As for the Revell kit, I would be surprised if it didn't have a prototype. When you think of early plastic
depots they almost all had prototypes (Rico, Hilside, gothic DL&W... did AHM's
Arlee have a prototype?).
