Meanwhile in Germany...

A 1954-built 0-8-0 fireless has just been sold from a railroad museum to a big power plant (GKM) in Mannheim. The locomotive has spent 40 years in service, being preserved for 20 years and now faces a new career in daily service.

For those who can read German, click (with pic) .

The power plant, where she will be working from 2015 after an overhaul by Meiningen already uses three fireless steam locomotives. Axles and pressure vessel have already ben ultra-sonicked before the deal. This is her new workplace: click

Cheers,
Mike

DLM in Switzerland has also done recent work with fireless steam locomotives. This link will take you to a news story from 2012 on their website showing a couple of fireless locomotives they overhauled and returned to service:

http://www.dlm-ag.ch/en/news?start=10

The link on this page opens a PDF document (also in German) which includes quite a bit of info on their research, including information on some very advanced fireless locomotives that were built in the 1950's (and possibly later) in Germany which could serve as a basis for building new fireless steamers:

Even if you don't read German (like me) there are plenty of cool drawings and photos to peruse.

I found this PDF on the page from your first link. Interesting they source Chapelon and Wardale.

There are numerous other PDFs with interesting material.

Jeff- Roger Waller, the President and CEO of DLM, has a long history with advanced steam. He worked at the South African Railways assisting David Wardale with the comprehensive testing of "the Red Devil". From there he went to work at the Swiss Locomotive Works (SLM), where he sucessfully orchestrated the design, construction and sale of a new series of modern "rack" steam locomotives for use in Austria and Switzerland in the 1990's. When SLM decided to get out of the steam business, he successfully led a buy-out that created DLM, which remains in the steam business to this day. While they have not yet sold any new locomotives, they have designs ready and they continue to do modernizations of existing steam locomotives. They have also actually retrofit several ships back from diesel to steam power.

There's a nice write-up on Roger at the 5AT website here: http://5at.co.uk/index.php/modern-steam ... aller.html

Not to hi-jack this thread but news came through yesterday that Atlantic Rail in Capetown, South Africa, the custodians of 3450 "Red devil" are negotiating with the THF to put the locomotive back into service.
