I don't know of many who would be willing to sacrifice even a "stuffed and mounted" steamer, but this locomotive on display in the UK is a beautifully animated example of how a dynamic display can be created: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_ZQjulABYs I believe this one is in the UK, but am not sure as to the location. There is another one at the York Railway Museum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOsisSv_8xo. I also want to say there are a couple more examples of displays like this, but these two give a wonderful idea of what is possible.

One of the best interpetations of history is the story told at the Dennison, OH depot and it's relation to the troop trains and the Canteen that was located there. The community has embraced it and they do a great job telling the story of the railroad locally and the role of the local citizens with the Canteen, etc. Well worth a trip.
