Make that "A scrapyard owner/worker might not THINK TO question a reasonable story"

I have worked with a railroad scrapper in the past, and none of the local scrap dealers we took loads of cut up rail, tie plates, spikes, and freight car parts to ever even questioned where the material came from. In all cases the material was delivered in trucks and on trailers that had no markings to indicate it was coming from a legitimate scrapper. Scrap dealers are just interested in making money, they don't care where the scrap material comes from.
BTW, being friends with a railroad scrapper is a good thing, it helps keep things big and small from going to scrap that would otherwise be gone forever. See photo below for my biggest personal save:
