For those who might have some interest in the thought and policy that went into the design progression of the EMD F-units, I would just like to point out the existence of the booklet “The Requirements of a Diesel-Electric Locomotive”, based on a paper by EMD General Manager N. C. Dezendorf in 1953. This is a small pocket booklet, measuring about 4 x 6 inches, and is occasionally seen on eBay.

The booklet, being a sales tool, is of course strongly biased toward the EMD product line, but it does provide an interesting overview of the thought that went into some of the product changes, as well as providing some comparisons of EMD’s methods with those of other builders.

It is possibly of interest to those who want to interpret early EMD locomotive products for museum visitors.
