Last Sunday our Jones & Laughlin Steel No. 58 ran for the first time in well over half a century. After being neglected and tossed around for many decades, this most unusual steam locomotive is the latest member of the active steam locomotive roster in the US.

We have found that the chief advantage of her immense weight (40 tons+) is that even when running lite she puts out some good stack talk! She is such a joy to run. These have been the best four years of my life restoring this locomotive.

Saddle tank yet to be put on. I'm still finishing it up. As you can see we found an inventive way to circumvent that issue.

Now we switch gears to building more track!

An inspiration, Rick! You're a steam railroader reincarnated! Congratulations!

Rick, Congratulations to you and your team! I wish y'all Dry Rails and Smooth Running, as a new chapter is opening up in the locomotive's history. (Perhaps you should write a book about her Rick.) Also, What kind of Whistle does she wear?

That is actually a replica British Railways A4 whistle. Its supposed to have a 4" Crosby 3 chime, at least that is what the photo of 58 in service seems to show.

Well done, Rick! Your volunteers have a lot to be proud of!

Nice to see another industrial steam locomotive back in operation. You also have the advantage that, being smaller, she'll make a smaller hole in the budget than a larger locomotive.
