Dave, and Kelly Anderson.
Thanks for your comments....made me grin.

As a rail photographer, have watched with great interest, as various engineer's wrestle with injectors. Much pulling of levers and muttered curses until, with strange gurgling noises ..the thing starts working. Seems more of an art than science.

Great thread. Have learned a great deal about air pumps. Looked at your latest rendering, which shows a non-finned version. I guess that is what's fitted to CPR 136..? A 4-4-0 1883 Roger's, now running on South Simcoe Railway at Tottenham, Ontario.

Steven Harrod. Re. Whistle guard.

The whistle is plumbed directly into the steam dome.
Meaning it uses saturated steam.
Which can occasionally "slobber" scalding water along with steam when operated.

The guard prevents the crew from getting a face full of it,
as it's a small engine, and the whistle is quite close to the cab.

That's what I've been told anyway.

Here's a quiz question...Anyone care to comment on what Hogger Bryan is up to..just before departure...?

Trying to find 25 lbs. more steam?

re. 160 psi.. not showing on the gauge.
Nice answer..smiled at that.

Retired CN railroader Bryan is bringing #3 to operational condition.
Seen here, simmering quietly, waiting for the crew to arrive.
After the hostler brought it out of the shed.

Bryan is topping-up the boiler water using the injector.
Adding that cold water will cool things down.
Thus the low boiler pressure.
But didn't take long to build up full pressure.

The 8" Air Compressor is not a common item and not constructed like a 9 1/2" . How many operating locomotives have one? This is the air compressor for Detroit & Lima Northern 7, it was new old stock before it was restored to operation.

Looks like I am going to have to change the color of the shaft compression fittings (from polished metal to brass) and their appearance for which I used pictures of a 9 1/2" or 11 1/2".

The spacing of the bolt holes on the 8" "match" the mounting studs on the Climax F136 mounting bracket given Climax's manufacturing standards. I measured 20 1/4" and the drawing I found states 20 1/16".

They found wood cylinder lagging in Climax 1551 when it was dis-assembled for restoration. The photos of the Westinghouse Air Compressors makes me think that the wood lagging was original.
