 Post subject: N.C. Docks FM?
PostPosted: Tue Aug 05, 2003 12:39 pm

Anyone know what happened to the FM switcher that was sitting on the North Carolina state docks, in Wilmington, N.C.? She was intact and out of service in 1996. A sister had been cut down to flat car status.

This is NOT a "baby trainmanster". Model H-16-66 1600HP 6 axle is so the so called baby Trainmaster. The CPR unit is a H-16-44 1600 HP 4 axle.

You are right, R.L. Although folks (like me) call the "-44's" Babies, they are not.

Since we are picking nits, it is "Train Master." That's another mistake I often make.

We used to call H-16-44's, "Toastmasters". True!

Great thread! FYI, Calgary is a great place for FM fans ...
• The H-16-44 is expected to receive a cosmetic restoration by students at a local technical institute.
• Speaking of (the real) Baby Trainmasters, there's an inoperable H-16-66 stored at CP's Ogden shops. It's a former Squaw Creek Coal unit, now privately owned and numbered 7009 (if I recall correctly), in a number series CP used for demonstrators (CP had only the big ones, not the Babies). I believe it's painted tuscan and grey like its non-operational kin in Delson.
• The same owner has one of two surviving CPA-16-4As, a Fairbanks-Morse (actually Canadian Locomotive Company) C-liner, No. 4104. It's operable, but has only ran a couple of times (just for testing) in the past 20 or so years. It too is stored at Odgen, where it once called home during its CP operable years.
• Two former C-liner B-units, later robot cars for BC Rail, are stored just south of Calgary. They were saved by the same Calgary preservation group with the intention of pairing each with the surviving As (the other A, No. 4065, is in Ottawa). Both are just shells but probably wouldn't need much to be restored cosmetically.
• Finally, just south of Calgary is another CLC unit, a tiny diesel-hydraulic switcher restored to its CP colours and used on a short stretch of privately owned track with a smattering of restored CP equipment.
Needless to say, Calgary probably has more FM (esque) equipment than probably anywhere else in North America.
