Hello, everyone. First, I'm sorry it took longer than usual for me to start this new thread for the new year. The last 2 years have been very hard on me, and the start of this year has been very busy (in a very good way).

Second, here is where things stand regarding all the current steam locomotive restorations (as best as I can determine right now) and all of the highlights for the past several years since I started doing these threads (so we can remember all that has transpired recently).

Third, out of genuine curiosity, please feel free to let me know how helpful these threads have been for you as I'm still trying to figure out how they benefit others.

Fourth, I have listened to feedback about these threads, and I'm going to tweak this post a little to make it (and future ones) better. Please continue to give me constructive feedback.

[Also, I decided to include links to any of the organizations/railroads/tourist lines that could use donations to either help maintain their steam locomotive(s) or aid in the restoration of their steam locomotive(s). This is by no means an attempt to pressure anyone to donate. I'm just attempting to make it a little easier for anyone who would like to donate to any of these locomotives. If anyone knows a donation link for any of the locomotives that don't have one listed, please feel free to provide it.]

I wish RHMA the best of luck with returning #3985 to steam and bringing #5511 back under steam after #3985 is done. https://rrhma.com/support-rrhma/ & https://rrhma.com/double_match/

- China State Railways (Iowa Interstate) QJ class 2-10-2 #6988 ran out of flue time, and, hopefully, her 1472 SDI will be starting in the near future. Here's hoping it's not too long before she's running the rails again.

- Southern Pacific F-1 class 2-10-2 #982 will be moved from her current location when the time is right, and the Texas Railway Preservation Association will be working to restore her to operation. Best of luck to all involved. It'll be something to see a US-built 2-10-2 operating again someday. https://www.trpahouston.org/donate-now

- Chesapeake & Ohio J-3a class 4-8-4 #614 is continuing to make great strides in her restoration for her 3rd lease on life. I can't wait to see her running again.

- Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis J3-57 class 4-8-4 #576 is continuing to inch closer to operating after passing her hydrostatic test. I'm so glad that things are going so right for her, and what a beauty she will be when she's finished. https://www.nashvillesteam.org/donate/

- Reading T-1 class 4-8-4 #2100 is steadily getting closer and closer to finishing up her restoration, and what a sight she will be. She has had her firebrick finished, and a steam-up is on the horizon. https://www.fireup2100.org/donate/

- St. Louis Southwestern/Cotton Belt L1 class 4-8-4 #819 is currently being cosmetically restored as an operational restoration is proving difficult at this time (but I don't think it's out of the question). I do hope she is able to get up and running again one day in the future.

- Pennsylvania T-1b class 4-4-4-4 #5550 is still steadily being constructed and moving closer and closer to completion. She is currently at least 50% complete. [Thanks NS6770fan] https://prrt1steamlocomotivetrust.org/station/

- Chesapeake & Ohio K-4 class 2-8-4 #2716 is proceeding along with her (very thorough) restoration very nicely, and they hope to have her operable in the not-to-distant future. - East Broad Top 14 class 2-8-2 #15 will be the next steam locomotive that the EBT brings back into service, and funds are being raised for the restoration while work slowly begins to commence. Good luck, EBT!

- Frisco (St. Louis-San Francisco) 1350 class 2-8-2 #1352 was purchased by the Valley Railroad in Essex, CT in 2024, but then the Valley Railroad turned around and sold #1352 to the Aberdeen, Carolina, and Western in Candor, North Carolina. If anyone has any more information on what happened, please feel free to share.

- Grand Trunk Western S-3-a class 2-8-2 #4070 continues to move along with her restoration. While she is still quite a ways from being finished, here's hoping it won't be too long before she's running down the rails again. https://www.midwestrailway.org/article/restoration-4070

- Owen Oregon Lumber Company {California Western} 3 class 2-8-2 #45 is currently undergoing restoration to operation. Hopefully, it won't be long before the "Skunk Train" runs again.

- Port of Grays Harbor (Carlton & Coast) 2-8-2 #5 is being restored to operation by the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, and they are getting close to finishing her restoration. Here's hoping that this massive H.K. Porter-built steam locomotive will be running again soon. https://www.wfim.org/porter5

- Puget Sound & Cascade (Cowlitz, Chehalis & Cascade) 200 class 2-8-2 #15 has been down for a while when it was discovered that multiple repairs needed to be done. Early in 2020, the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad & Museum received $154,000 from the state of Washington's supplemental capital budget, and, early this year, #15 underwent a thorough inspection from Stathi Pappas. - Canadian National M-3-d class 2-8-0 #2141 will be returning back to steam again. Unlike all of the other locomotives on this list, this locomotive isn't undergoing a 1472 SDI right after time ran out, nor is it beginning a restoration after decades of inactivity. As best as I understand it, the locomotive ran recently, but it had to stop running due to a conflict with the track owners. So, if all goes well, it shouldn't take long for the Kamloops Heritage Railway to have #2141 running again soon. Best of luck, everyone! https://kamrail.com/donate-to-khr/

- Denver & Rio Grande Western C-16 class 2-8-0 #223 has gotten a major new breath of fresh air with her restoration to operation, and she will eventually join the motive power at the Colorado Railroad Museum. I'm so glad she will get her chance to run again.

- Great Western 75 class 2-8-0 #75 has been down for quite some time, but, like UP #618, she is slowly, but surely, undergoing a very through rebuild. Hopefully, it won't be too long in the future before we see her under her own power again. [Thanks xboxtravis7992]

- Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain 37 class 2-8-0 #38 "is progressing on a low priority basis with passenger cars consuming more of the capital dollars at the moment. Firebox repairs should be completed in 2021 at which point we will turn our attention to the running gear." [Thanks Alan Maples]

- Lake Superior & Ishpeming (Western Maryland Scenic Railroad) 18/SC-1 class 2-8-0 #734 [#34] needs a thorough rebuild from drivers to smokestack. Western Maryland Scenic is raising funds to restore #734 (especially after failing to acquire Western Maryland K-2 class 4-6-2 #202), and I can't wait to see the day where "Maryland Thunder" & "Mountain Thunder" are operating side-by-side. https://wmsr.com/donate

- Lake Superior & Ishpeming C-5/SC-4 - superheated class 2-8-0 #21 has slowly, but steadily, been getting restored to operation by Harvey Diversified Trades LLC. - Louisiana & Pacific 250 class 2-8-0 #252 (Virginia & Truckee #29) just went down for her 1472 SDI. Here's hoping it won't take very long before she is running alongside McCloud River 18 class 2-8-2 #18 & Charles R McCormick Lumber Company 100 class 2-8-2 #100 (Virginia & Truckee #30).

- Nevada Northern 81 class 2-8-0 #81 has been returned to service after resolving some problems that arose lately. Thanks to everyone who donated to the Nevada Northern at the end of last year because it was your kindness that made this possible.

- Soo Line F-21-S class 2-8-0 #2425, previously purchased by Mineral Range Railroad in Michigan, has now been acquired by the Big South Fork Scenic Railroad and will operate there once she is returned to operation. Here's hoping this ol' girl gets some much needed TLC.

- Southern Ks-1 class 2-8-0 #722 has had its boiler work done at Strasburg, and the boiler has been sent back to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. It'll be so wonderful to see her once she's finished and running again, and she will also be converted to burn oil. Good luck, Al Harper, GSMR, & AHR! I can't wait to see #722 once she's running again. It will be so wonderful to see another Southern steam locomotive returned to operation (let alone one getting to run on its native trackage again).

- Union Pacific 420-superheated class 2-8-0 #428 is now getting some more focused attention on her restoration (since J. Neils Lumber Company 3-truck Shay #5 is now up and running and Frisco 1613 class 2-10-0 #1630 is still operating well). I think this ol' girl has been very patient, and, now, she's going to be getting a lot of TLC. https://www.irm.org/up428/

- Union Pacific (Heber Valley Railroad) C-2 class 2-8-0 #618 is still moving along steadily with her restoration (as best as we know) as resources are available, and the plan, depending on how things go, is that she could be operational in the near future. [Thanks burbri45 & xboxtravis7992] https://www.hebervalleyrr.org/the-no-61 ... tion-blog/

- White Pass & Yukon 61 class 2-8-0 #61 is an outside-frame locomotive that once was in the Skagway River as rip-rap. Stathi Pappas, the current owner, and his Stockton Locomotive Works are slowly working on this project as time is available. A lot of work has been done on this locomotive, and I can't wait to see how good she will look when she's finished and operating again. It’s great to see another locomotive getting yet another chance at life. [Thanks Brian Norden]

- White Pass & Yukon 69 class 2-8-0 #69 might also be running in the near future (for the first time since 2013). [Thanks JohnHillier]

- Anaconda Company #7 {Western Lumber #3} 3-truck Willamette is undergoing work at the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula. Bearings and appliances are being gone through with hope for steam on or near it's 100 birthday. The Historical Museum has a progress link on its page for those who are interested. [Thanks AlderGulch12] https://fortmissoulamuseum.org/support/save-the-train/

- Atlantic Coast Line P-5-A class 4-6-2 #1504 was acquired by U.S. Sugar, and she will be restored to operate alongside #148. Personally, I'm very happy for U.S. Sugar for acquiring #1504 and planning to restore her to operation, but I, personally, hope she is able to keep her ACL livery.

- Boston & Maine P-4a class 4-6-2 #3713 is still being restored at Steamtown (as best we know), and, hopefully, we will see her run under her own power again. It looks like things might have stagnated, but I hope things resume soon. I know she will look really nice, but, personally, I hope they install the "earmuffs" (small smoke deflectors) on her again at some point. http://www.project3713.com/support-3713/

- Canadian National J-4-a class 4-6-2 #5080 has been “sold” to the Aspen Crossing Railway Corporation “…where it will be resurrected within two years and get her back on track”. It appears that as of March 18th, 2019, the project is getting underway in regards to moving the locomotive and tender. [Thanks Mgoldman]

- Canadian National J-7-b class 4-6-2 #5288 (Canadian Government #516) has been acquired from the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum by the Colebrookdale Railroad, and she will be restored to operation (alongside Grand Trunk Western J-3a class 4-6-2 #5030 & Lake Superior & Ishpeming SC-4 class 2-8-0 #18). Good luck, Colebrookdale! I can't wait to see steam run on your rails in the future. https://www.dynamicticketsolutions.com/ ... ations.cfm

- Grand Trunk Western J-3a class 4-6-2 #5030 was purchased by the Colebrookdale Railroad and will eventually be restored to operation. - Pennsylvania K4s class 4-6-2 #1361 has generally been viewed with quite a bit of pessimism regarding her ever operating under her own power again. That being said, Wick Moorman has outlined a new strategic plan to bring #1361 back into service. It looks like #1361 is getting another chance at running again (and a pretty good one from how this looks). Here's hoping they will make her look like she did pre-WWII. [Thank you, Ross Rowland] https://railroadcity.square.site/produc ... gory_id=14

- Southern Pacific P-10 class 4-6-2 #2479 has been under restoration for quite some time. Hopefully, she can be finished and operated again one day. https://ctrc.org/about-ctrc/donate

- Canadian National H-6-g class 4-6-0 #1392 had a tube replaced this winter and more recently passed her hydro at the Alberta Railway Museum. Hopefully, it won't be long before she's moving under her own power again. [Thanks SD70dude]

- Chicago & North Western R-1 class 4-6-0 #175 has already begun to receive some serious work from SRI. She will be a very nice addition for them when all is said and done. [Thanks Les Beckman] https://michigansteamtrain.charityproud.org/Donate

- Chicago & North Western R-1 class 4-6-0 #1385 is finally nearing the finish line for her restoration having been successfully steamed up last year. Here's hoping it won't be too much longer before she's running again. https://www.midcontinent.org/category/cnw-1385/

- Northern Pacific S-4 class 4-6-0 #1364 has also been receiving some work up at Toppenish, Washington, and she welcomed in the new year by steaming up for the first time in over 70 years. Hopefully, it won't be long before she is running again. https://nprymuseum.org/help-out/

- Southern Pacific {Grapevine Vintage Railroad} DC/T-1/T-25 class 4-6-0 #2248 is being put back together. Her new boiler has been placed on top of her frame, and her driving wheels are back with the frame as well. Hopefully, it won't be too much longer before "Puffy" is steaming again.

- Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe 1000 class 2-6-2 #1010 has been announced towards the end of last year to have begun fundraising for a restoration to operation. Good luck, California State Railroad Museum! Hopefully, #1010 will feel a fire in her firebox again in the not-to-distant future. https://www.californiarailroad.museum/g ... estoration

- Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe 1050 class 2-6-2 #1129 is now getting attention from the Rough Riders Rail Rehab Organization. Their main goal is to preserve #1129, cosmetically restore her, and (if funds and parts allow) operationally restore her. Good luck, 4RO! I hope you will also be able to run a AT&SF 2-6-2 one day. https://www.lasvegasoptic.com/news/busi ... 438f5.html, https://www.lasvegas4ro.com/, & https://www.gofundme.com/f/Help-us-rest ... ty-history

- Klondike Mines 4 class 2-6-2 #4 is undergoing restoration to operation, and the South Park Rail Society has recently announced that they contracted restoration work of #4 "Klondike Kate" with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad shop crew. With the expertise of the D&S shop crew and the SPRS' own volunteers, it hopefully won't be long before #4 is riding the rails again. https://www.southparkrailsociety.org/klondike-kate-4

- MacMillan Bloedel & Powell River Ltd. 2-6-2 #1077 was sidelined earlier this year and faces an uncertain future about whether, or when, she will return to operation. Here's hoping that she will be cleared to operate again in the near future. If anyone has any more information about #1077 that can be shared, it would be greatly appreciated. https://railfan.com/future-uncertain-fo ... bia-2-6-2/ & https://www.change.org/p/the-1077-steam ... l-be-saved

- Canadian National (Middletown & Hummelstown) E-10-a class 2-6-0 #91 is continuing to be restored by the Middletown & Hummelstown as time and finances permit. According to the most recent report, "The boiler was successfully pressure tested, but, unfortunately, the tubes need to be removed to satisfy the 1472 inspection. The engine was only run for 116 days of the last inspection, so everything should be fine." [Thanks Blade3562]

- Southern Pacific M-6 class 2-6-0 #1744 was purchased by the Pacific Locomotive Association, and they are continuing to restore her to operation. They continually provide updates on the restoration of #1744. https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_b ... 3ABGFK22FQ [Thanks David Dewey]

- The Virginia & Truckee 2-6-0 “Lyon” is a full size standard gauge wood burning replica steam locomotive being built by the Mason City & Clear Lake Electric Railroad Historical Society. - Union Pacific S-4 class 0-6-0 #4420 is apparently being slowly, but steadily, being restored back to operational status. Here's hoping for the best for her return to steam. https://www.steamengine4420.org/blank-page

- U.S. Army/Navy S100 class 0-6-0T #5002 began her restoration at the shop of Brett Goertemoeller, owner of BMG Railroad Contractors, LLC. They made fast progress early (including performing the ultrasound), and it looks like it might not take too long before she’s running again if things continue at this pace. [Thanks airforcerail]
https://www.armysteam.com/

- U.S. Army S155 class 0-6-0 (Virginia Blue Ridge Ry. #5 / Morris County Central Railroad) #4039 is also making progress. The new boiler is almost completed over in Colorado, and the boiler tubes were shipped from Whippany to Colorado in 2019. The original plans were to install them once the boiler was shipped to Whippany and mounted on the frame, but that changed in 2018. A new cab has been constructed, and the tender has been completely rebuilt, along with all the appliances. Once the new (welded) boiler is mounted, the final assembly can take place. The most recent report states: "The new firebox has returned to Mammoth Boiler Works in Colorado and will soon be joined to the new barrel. Once that is done, the new tubes can be installed." [Thanks Al Holleuffer] (P.S. How have things been? I haven't heard from you in quite some time.) https://www.dynamicticketsolutions.com/ ... ations.cfm

Congratulations, WK&S! #65 "is slowly being restored as time and money is available. There are lots of things that need to be worked on, but the large portion of the project is replacing the internal firebox (door sheet, rear tube sheet, crown, and side sheets). We just hit an exciting milestone as the new door sheet and rear tube sheet were delivered to the railroad. Next step is fitting them in place, which we hope to complete in the spring." [Thanks jdorn]

- Cabin Creek Lumber Company {Cascade Lumber Company} 2-truck Class A Climax #1 has been donated to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad by the family of the late owner of the locomotive that saved it. The OCSR plans to restore the locomotive (the only surviving standard gauge Class A Climax in the world) to operation, and it is hoped that the locomotive will be a traveling exhibit for the museum once it is running (due to its small size). Best of luck, OCSR! https://railfan.com/oregon-coast-scenic ... re-climax/ & https://oregoncoastscenic.org/contact/ (to donate)

- Holmes Eureka Lumber No. 4, a two-truck Climax, is under restoration at the Roots of Motive Power, a railroad and logging museum in Northern California. They are hoping to have her operational in two years. Here's wishing them the best of luck.

- Wild Goose Railroad 2-truck Climax #3 "has been successfully retrieved from Alaska by Corry RAILS and arrived in Corry, PA, the home of all Climax locomotives, on October 16, 2020". Once warmer weather arrives, the plan is to begin sorting through all of the parts, evaluating the condition of everything, and then starting the restoration of "the only known original and nearly complete Climax Class "A", back to full steam operation". Good luck, guys. [Thanks Carl W] https://corryrails.com/

- Mississippi Central (Wilmington & Western) 98 class 4-4-0 #98 is down for her 1472 SDI. While I'd love to see #98 run again someday soon, things are very turbulent at the W&W right now, and it's unknown if steam will run there again.

- San Antonio & Aransas Pass E-40 class 4-4-0 #60 should be further evaluated (and hopefully have her boiler ultrasounded) along with the newly acquired 2-truck Shay Oregon, Pacific & Eastern RR #112. {Personally, I hope I can see #60 operate in the not-so-distant future.} [Thanks RookieFireman]

- Bridgton & Saco River 7 class 2-4-4T #8 (after a very recent announcement) will be restored back to operation. Well done, Maine Narrow Gauge & Maine Locomotive & Machine Works! It'll be so wonderful to see both 2' gauge 2-4-4Ts running together again.

- The Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway has been working very hard to build a new steam locomotive (2-4-4T #11). "2023 saw the near completion of the locomotive's frame, with the forward and rear frames joined together and cylinders installed. 2024's work will focus on completing the front (pony) and rear (tender) trucks of the 2-4-4T, as well as the casting, machining, and installation of the drive wheels." [Thanks elecuyer] http://www.build11.org

- Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington 0-4-4T #10 has made progress. "Work in late 2023 - early 2024 has focused on the smokebox, smokebox door (which is original to the locomotive, but needs a set of adaptors to fit the new, larger smokebox), and running gear. Construction of the new boiler will commence in early 2024." https://forum.wwfry.org/index.php/topic,71.0.html [Thanks elecuyer]

- Coronet Phosphate 0-4-2T #6 is under restoration at McHugh Locomotive in Fairless Hills, PA. Hopefully, her restoration won't take too long. Updates on her restoration can also be viewed in the thread "The Train the Wouldn't Die." [Thanks tomgears]

- Coronet Phosphate 0-4-2T #7 is trying to be acquired, and returned to Florida for operational restoration, by FLAIRR (Florida Adventures in Railroading). Good luck, FLAIRR! Here's hoping you are able to acquire, and restore, #7. https://flairr.org/coronet-phosphate-%237

- Kiso Forest Railway 0-4-2T #9 is in the middle of raising funds for an operational restoration by 2029 (for the locomotive's 100th birthday). I know that AoSR is continuing to work on their locomotives, but I don't have a clear idea on where they stand with their projects at this time (with the possible exception of YW 2-8-2 #19). If anyone has more detailed information on any of these locomotives that they are safe to share, please feel more than welcome to do so.

When I first started making this list back in 2019, it contained only 14 steam locomotives under restoration to operation. Now, the list of locomotives returned to service/being restored/being rebuilt since the list started sits at well over 5× the original starting number. That was truly amazing, and it really brings a smile to my face to see so much steam moving towards operation again.

If there are any other steam locomotives that started (or are still undergoing) an operational restoration, please feel free to list which locomotive it is (and roughly where things stand, if you know). Likewise, if you know any additional details/updates (that can be shared) for any of the locomotives already mentioned, please feel free to inform me.
We could always use more good news regarding steam.

{Lastly, while it isn't currently being restored, U.S. Army / TVRM #610 was pushed into the shops around September 2018 for evaluation on the feasibility of possibly restoring her again. With no official word from TVRM (that I'm aware of at this time), I guess we'll see what happens.}

I'll clarify for the record (and hopefully avoid future questions until an announcement otherwise is made) that physical work on 3713 is on pause while Steamtowns' limited shop staff (thanks DOGE) focus on repairs to BLW26 (firebox patch, nearly complete), Meadow Rivers #1, needed repairs to the coach fleet, Erie Business Car #3, and a number of smaller but more urgent mechanical projects (on top of the regular inspection and maintenance schedules for all the in-service equipment.)

During this downtime, work is still happening in the background to formulate a new plan of attack for 3713 when man hours and dollars are available, and the Iron Horse Society, Steamtowns' non-profit friends group, is re-tooling their effort to raise funds for 3713 specifically.

No timeframe is promised for any of these projects.

As an aside, many of us would love to bring 3713 out with the smoke deflectors and skyline casing, but there are too many visible mechanical changes made after they were removed to accurately depict her in that as-built condition, so she will return to service as she appeared at the end of her career, with no streamlining, and speed lettering.

The new Superintendent is committed to transparency, and he's made it clear that his priority is to provide the steam experience to as many visitors as possible, and the way to do that is to keep the daily yard shuttle steam-powered (with mainline steam being a luxury when we can provide it.) That said, the current leadership is open to working with visiting equipment, so you may see large steam run at Steamtown well before 3713 is ready.

Thanks for the clarification - I'll be happy to contribute in whatever modest way I can once the fundraising efforts pick up again. I was just skiing at Montage the weekend before last, so I do get out to Scranton now and then and would love to see some mainline steam there again. And if my job situation keeps in me in the Jersey shore region (which is uncertain but such is life) I'd like to help bring steam back to the narrow gauge Pine Creek at Allaire. With 4 locomotives in storage (SS&S 26, Ely Thomas Shay 6, United Fruit 46, and CLR Lady Edith 3) it would be nice to see at least one make this list one of these years!

Brian, If I'm reading this correctly, steady work on the 3713 was actually steadily ongoing until this past fiscal year (2025) when Trump announced DOGE cuts that were effective for NPS as of May-July 2025?

Work was progressing steadily until around the start of the pandemic, when the shop was closed to volunteers and work on 3713 halted under the previous leadership. During the interim when there was an "acting" Superintendent, work resumed, but at a much smaller scale since there was no budget line for the work. That work was paused more or less around the time the decision was made to start exploratory deconstruction of Meadow River #1, with that choice being affirmed when #1 was green-lit for operational restoration.

During the span of 2020-2025 multiple shop crew retired, and the DOGE cuts eliminated plans to hire new people to fill those positions. The shop is going forward significantly understaffed, even by 2020 standards, which was already significantly reduced from the shop roster of 1995.

Once a government position that exists is eliminated, it is extremely difficult to re-create that position, especially if the sky doesn't immediately fall without it. Of course, no one wants to talk about the multi-million dollar "deferred maintenance" list between the collection and the physical plant of the shop and yard. We know exactly how bad it is, but as long as the gates still open in the morning, the politicians will argue that we're doing just fine with the resources we have.

Well, it looks like there's at least 1 locomotive I accidentally left off the list.

- US Army Transportation Corps Pershing class 2-8-0 #396 (Southern Pine Lumber Company #28 / Texas State Railroad #300) is still undergoing her rebuild, but, hopefully, it won't be much longer before she is finished and running again.

Oregon, Pacific and Eastern #19 is now operable at Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum, and will have a formal public presentation and dedication ceremony on April 9 at the Sugarcreek, Ohio station. See AoSRM website for details.

Sierra #28 was NOT operable when I was there last June. The guide told me it needs a 1472, but I don't know how accurate that report is. No. 3 is the only operable steam loco there and did operate over July 4.

I thought #12 was operational?

I didn't realize the #3 had been operating - I would love to see her under steam.

I thought #12 was operational?

Morehead & North Fork #12 is still operational at AOS.

I see where I got confused - it went from AOS to Jamestown but AOS.

I see where Colebrookdale at least completed a cosmetic restoration of CN 5288 and moved it to Boyertown for display. There were mentions that the boiler has been ultra-sounded, but the railroad has been busy with other projects and hasn't really worked on it mechanically. No word on the ex-LS&I 18 and apparently moving GTW 5030 was tied up by a sewer project in Jackson, and now they're looking at moving it by flatcar.

I would like, if I can, to add the Colorado steam news.

Former West Side Lumber 12 was moved to Yosemite Mountain Sugarpine for a return to service.

Durango & Silverton K-36 481 is nearing completion of is conversion to burn fuel oil. This engine as I understand had a large amount of firebox work taken care of as part of the conversion.

Durango & Silverton K-28 478 is being restored to service. This engine last saw operation in about 2016, and had been spotted stripped down outside the Roundhouse, and seems to be moving in and out as work is being done. It will be converted to oil as part of the process.

Now for the moment you all have been waiting for!!!!
SARHM is excited to announce, we have entered into an agreement with the Gulf & Ohio Railroad to acquire the LAST remaining San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railroad locomotive, the SA&AP #60!!!
This has been years in the waiting! We had been negotiating with the Stone Mountain Memorial Association prior to being sold to the G&O. When the locomotive was sold off, we never gave up hope that we could one day return the SA&AP 60 home to Texas and her home rails! Today, that dream has finally come to the point where it will become a reality!
With Scott Lindsay’s experienced eyes on site today, we did an initial survey of the locomotive and its condition. It definitely needs some serious work, but as Scott said, it’s all relative. In addition to worn out parts and missing parts, we will be putting together a plan of attack for the restoration plan….
Oh yes, we WILL be restoring her to operation!!!
The main, GLARING, issue we found was with the outer firebox wrap. The metal is thinned in several places, sever pitting, case iron rigid stay bolts, NO flexible stay bolts…. Yes, you read that right, no flexible stay bolts. For those that don’t know, that is the reason she was removed from steam operations at Stone Mountain in the early 90’s. We don’t know the full details, other than what Mr. Kevin Wood who worked on her at that time told us, that during the rebuild at that time, someone decided to replace the flexible stays with rigid stays. This is an immediate violation and can lead to a VERY catastrophic event occurring! There are also some extremely poor previous boiler patches on the firebox, that just will not pass inspection.
In the coming weeks, we will be posting more detailed photos (we’ve got a SD card full) where we will discuss other issues and repairs that will be needed. We will also be discussing our plan for the phases of restoration. For now, we are going to start with getting the Baldwin boiler diagrams and such to make a comprehensive restoration plan.
We will be launching a page on our website in the coming week with a dedicated donation button for this project!
WE ARE SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!! IT’S A DREAM COME TRUE!!!!
