Post subject: Looking for Baggage Car
PostPosted: Sun Dec 14, 2003 2:58 am

I would like to know of any steel baggage cars in the North-East or New England states, that would be available.

Anything out there, un-used, retired by the class-1's, or surplus on a museum/tourist line roster ??

Any road, but must be a steel car(not wood), and able to be moved on its own wheels.

Baggage, combine, or possibly R-P-O.

Wanted for h-e-p generator car.

Thanks for any replies.

Steve,

The Vermont Railway has advertised their HEP car(s) and Santa Fe Budd coaches as available. This is the former American Ski Company train.

Right! Most, if not all, the VRS Budd coaches are from the original Super Chief. 1938 me thinks?

As a train, the Super Chief was always all-Pullman and no coaches except for those handled for El Capitan passengers.

Our company, DL&W Car Company, Inc., owns the HEP 50' baggage car used on the Acadian last year and presently stored in St. Albans, VT. It is completely Amtrak overhauled (800717)and available for purchase or lease. We also own another 50' baggage car in good condition with HEP, but not rebuilt to Amtrak standards, and presently stored in Green Bay , WI. It is from the former Great Lakes Western Fleet. And for those with beer budgets, we have one of these cars with a poor body, and the bums stole the HEP cable already, in the St. Louis area, for real cheap!

These cars were built for the US Army as kitchen cars by St. Louis Car in 1954. The rebuilt one has new roof and nailable steel boxcar flooring, would be excellent for conversion into a power car, although the nailable steel floor could be added to the Green Bay car. My business partner has extensive experience in generators, having built the former Transcisco power car presently providing most of the HEP for the BNSF business train. He has also sold about 75% of all Stadco individual power units under private and tour train cars in North America.

Right, Rick. These cars were converted into coaches later in life.

Hello

You might want to place a call to the folks at Steamtown. There were several ex DL&W baggage cars on the property (as many as four).

Last I looked at the info on these the whole train was to be sold as a package, not individual cars.

Some of the original ATSF Budd coaches were sold for commuter service in NJ. These included the very first (pre-production) Budd coach. I think the 3070 (the first Budd coach) is now in private hands. However, these cars were changed -- the mens and womens lounge rooms were removed and commuter style seats installed.

only one of the 1st Super Chief train set became a coach.

The 1st Super Chief built by Budd had the following cars:
3400 baggage-mail - sold for scrap 11/71
3430 baggage - sold for scrap 12/71
ISLETA 8-1-2 sleeper - to dorm car 3476
TAOS 6-2-2 sleeper - to coach 2956
1370 ALCOMA diner - now at California State RR Museum
1474 COCHITI lounge - last report at Santa Fe Southern
ORAIBI 6-2-2 sleeper - to dorm car 3472
LAGUNA 8-1-2 sleeper - wrecked
NAVAJO sleeper-obs - now at Colorado RR Museum

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the correction. Boy, I remeber those Santa Fe cars in NJ when I was a kid. I grew up a block from the NY&LB during the era of ex western coaches. Neat times.

Anyway, your research begs the question of the true history of the AT&SF cars in Vermont.

Anyone?

Don't know about the Vermont cars. But here is a list of New Jersey Transit cars obtained from the Santa Fe:

3070 Budd 1936
3072-79 Budd 1937
3081-83 Budd 1937
3085-95 Budd 1937
3097-99 Budd 1937
(source: Railway Passenger Car Annual #5, 1980)

The Indiana Museum of Transportation says that it has 15 of these cars, eight cars restored and one lost in a fire. It says it has 3072. See link below.

3070 was the Budd prototype (52-seat & two-vestibules). 3072-3101 were 60 seat cars with a single vestibule and built for service on the "Scout" but used many places on the system.

By the way, 3071 was a prototype car built by St. Louis Car Co. for the Santa Fe. It came painted green and I think I saw it in the sixies on a special train painted a silver-gray color Santa Fe used for smooth side head-end cars.
