The exsisting Reading Company T-1's are almost all scrapped!There are only 4 out of 30 left!!!The Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad's T-1 #2102 is taken care of.(Main line excursions , a nice shop was made for it and G-1 #425)Steamtown made a great static display for #2124 and has it on display for all generations.#2100 has been running lately(Last T-1 to run in the twentyith century) and is in great hands.But #2101 isn't in great condition.That fire really did a number on it!And I am not just telling people what to do I would gladly help!If we loose this RDG T-1 there will only be 3 left!#2101 is one of the neatest ones left, too(opinion).Something must be done I am a RCT&HS member and help out on frieght and passenger on the Reading & Northern!The Reading is my favorite railroad and it is hard to watch #2101 deteriate when it can be stopped.But I do see how there is practically nothing that can be done.I hope the B&O museum trys to keep it from being lost forever,because it is one of the last Reading T-1's left!

#2101 is in no danger of being scrapped. Unfortunately, she is probably not restorable to operating condition, although with enough money, anything is possible. If the RCTHS would like to donate the cost of a cosmetic restoration to the B&O Museum, I'm confident it would be accepted.

Calm Down. There is no emergency. None are in any danger of being scrapped; all 4 have good homes.

There have been 4 for 35 years or so; why is it suddenly such a big deal?

And that is 4 more than exist of a heck of a lot of other types of steam locomotives, so count your blessings.

I could not agree with you more. Just imagine how it is if you happened to be a fan of the Erie. There are no Erie locomotives anywhere!

By preservation standards, we have FAR TOO MANY damned Reading T1's. Look at the list:

Reading T1's: 30 built, 4 saved, 2 operable.
PRR K4s's: 425 built, 2 saved, one being rebuilt.
NYC Hudsons: dozens built, NONE saved.
PRR T1's: 50(?) built, NONE saved.
Erie Pacifics: NONE saved.
SR Ps-4's: only 1 saved, entombed in Smithsonian.
PRR I1s: 598 built, one saved.
NYC Mohawks: see NYC Hudsons.
NYC Niagaras: ditto.
ANY other NYC steam: I think it's 5 total, including 999.
B&O EM-1's: NONE saved.
DL&W TOTAL steam: two, inc. a rusty 2-6-0 and a rotting Camelback, NO Pacifics or Poconos.
B&M big steam: one Pacific.....

I open the floor to anyone else to pound some bleepin' sense in this young whippersnapper's head.

(Don't worry, Brother Aaron, we don't wish actual violence upon you. It's actually refreshing to see new faces and fresh enthusiasm for this hobby. We just would like you to get a grip on reality and help you realize that there IS more than the world of anthracite waste piles out there.
And before you assume anything of me--I was born and raised near Sunbury, just too late for the Reading Rambles.)

I sure don't lide to play the one up game, but there is also a NYC Mohawk at StLouis MOT. The context of the topic is right on the mark though, the NYC has a deplorable record of preservation.

What class of NYC locomotive was found in a scrapyard in Illinios last year? (wasn't in J. David Conrads books) I thought it was a Hudson, but I could be wrong.

Okay, apologies for accidentally forgetting Elkhart in a blurry, hypnotic, foggy state induced by looking at too many historic street scenes on the Md. Historical Society website.

Now, to get back on track, do you want me to stoop to citing statistics for the percentages of steam locos preserved from various roads? Granted, Reading should have spared something besides a bunch of 2-8-0s that were rebuilt into 4-8-4s and a Camelback 0-4-0, but someone whining that there are "only" four T1's left just bugged the heck out of me, y'know? Hell, I move we rebuild one of the T1s back into a 2-8-0, whadaya say?

You darn right made a boo-boo. You forgot about the two antebellum locos (4-4-0 and 0-4-0) at the Franklin Institute, the only inspection existing in the country at St. Louis MOT, and the Reading shop switcher that Geo. Hart used to own.

Gad, I'm getting old...... or maybe I'm just too focused on Baltimore street scenes right now....

For those keeping score, OK, I'll concede the shop switcher (it ain't even a tender loco,and we're counting it as a railroad's loco?); But I'm NOT counting the 0-4-0 and 4-4-0, nor the Reading inspection loco on two counts: the first two never actually operated as Reading locos (NOT People's Railway, NOT, Phila. & Reading, just Reading), and the latter is as freakish as putting an Indy 500 car or a hot-tub-equipped stretch limo in a "typical American Cars" exhibit.

Now, let's get back to "unbuilding" a 2-8-0 out of 2101 or 2124. Or maybe Muller's 2102--then he can use it on coal drags..... <;-)

Yeah, but you missed a few. The actual score for Illinois Central locos is:

4-8-2--two
2-8-2--one
2-6-0--one (at IRM--a cute little Mogul!)
2-8-0--one
0-6-0--three
0-8-0--one
2-4-4RT--one, and I'd dearly love to have it for IRM!
