For all of you who missed my recent,long, detailed post regarding the dispostion of the locomotives used in Buster Keaton`s movie "The General", the engine used in the trestle crash scene was left in the river after the filming ended in 1926, but was ALL REMOVED during the World War Two scrap drives----SIXTY YEARS AGO.

I new here, so I missed that one. Where exactly was that trestle located? I know they filmed part of the movie here in Oregon, so I was just curious if the site was here locally as well?

Send $19.50 to the Cottage Grove Historical Society, PO Box142, Cottage Grove OR 97424 and get their book "The Day Buster Smiled". It is a collecton of newspaper articles and pix which give a detailed account of the filming of "The General." Very Interesting...

Just in case you were wondering, nothing is left to show where the trestle was, (it was built especially for the movie), and there are no parts left lying in the river. I live in Cottage Grove and have known several people who know a lot about the subject and have looked for the location to see if there is anything left, but unfortunately there isn't. Rumor has it that some of the parts were in the river into the '60's though...

A little off topic, but since you live in cottage grove, you might know something about the JH Chambers covered RR bridge and the mill. Here's my webpage on it when I visited the area earlier this year. I have virtually no information on the history of the Chambers mill. Do you have any sources of info or can you tell me anything about it. I'd also love to see a picture of the mill when it was in operation.

Lastly, I plan to return to the area and track down any remains of the grade that the bridge was built for and that heads west. I'm sure very little if anything remains, but I've read that some parts of a few bridges that cross a creek out there still exist.

I certainly do know a little about the J.H. Chambers operation, my Great-Grandpa was their master mechanic and senior engineer, and as such I have a lot of pictures and some info about it. Look for an email from me soon!
