Lets see. Some one has proble asked this before but I would like to know what steam engines people like the most. It dosent have to be a locomotive that survives today and it can be any gauge (except live steam stuff). List the gauge, wheel arrangment, builder, year built and railroad it ran for.

Example - Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad #24. 2ft gauge, 2-6-2, built by Baldwin in 1919. scraped 1936 :(.

You can also list more then one locomotive.

My favorites are:

-SR&RL # 24 as listed above.

-Wiscasset Waterville & Farmington Railway #7. 2ft gauge, 2-4-4,
built by Baldwin in 1907. Scraped 1937.

-Surry Sussex & Southampton Railroad #26. 3ft gauge, 2-6-2,
built by Baldwin in 1920. presevered at NJMT.

-Pennsy Pre war 4-6-2 K4s, 4-4-2 E6s, and 4-8-2 M1as.

WW2 era MacArthur 2-8-2 36", 1000mm, and 42" gauge. Nearly 800 built by Alco, Baldwin, Davenport and Vulcan. Operated on various railroads around the world. Of the eleven 36" gauge variants that operated on the WP&YR four still survive. Two are operating today, No 190 is at Tweetsie, No 192 at Pigeon Forge TN. Nos 195 and 196 are at Skagway AK. No. 221, one of the 42" vairiants was recently restored to operation at Queensland OZ. At least one meter gauge variant is restored and operating at the NorthWestern Frontier Railway in India and another is at the New Dheli railway museum. One of the most succesful narrow gauge designs ever built.

Sorry I don't have all the details to hand, but here is the best I could come up with. Standard gauge unless otherwise noted.

Has to be the stuttering 4-10-2 Southern Pacifics used by the SP. Not very speedy, not very elegant, but functional and powerful.

If only 5021 had been allowed to run with the Freedom Train we might still have one operating. Someday ....

Even though most engineers hated them, I rather like the Pennsy T1. Lousy machine, but MAN did it look sexy!

Beyond that my favorites are the "big" 3' gauge Crown 4-4-0s, particularly the two European engines at Busch Williamsburg.

One of these days I hope to see H&B #44 under steam, and fire her. At that point she'll become my fav. :o)

I'd have to say I'm a push-over for anything designed or operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad. My particular sorrow is that one example of each of "the beautiful failures" no longer exist. A Q2 or T1 would make an exceptional excursion locomotive. Aside from the PRR, the NYC Hudson would be way up there, as well as most Camelback designs. I just love steam!

These two engines, along with #4070 (2-8-2) closed out steam operation on the Caseville Branch/ Cass City Sub/ "Polly-Ann" of the GTW.

Below is #5038 and the last train over the Detroit & Huron (Bad Axe branch) of the Cass City Sub, on April 30, 1951, and the crew that was on it. Some of my favorite shots in my collection.
