All;

The following webpage has more photographs taken at the Southern Forest Heritage Museum in Long Leaf, Louisiana. They were taken on Machine Shop day on Saturday, October 30, 2004.

http://www.faculty.mcneese.edu/jbailey/longleaf.htm

It shows visiting engines, as well as some of the other equipment on the museum grounds.

Photo 15 shows an Ingersoll-Rand Imperial Type 10 compressor, a stationary engine, and a pumping engine that were donated to the museum when an area lumber mill was closed down. I am hoping that Dave Lanthrop can join me in a visit to the museum sometime in the new year, it is my intention during my next visit to photograph and examine this equipment in more detail; along with a Westinghouse air compressor on the machine shop wall; and another pair of I-R air compressors in the sawmill itself. One of them is shown in Photo 12.

Note also in Photo 11 that the main beam for carknocker's shop roof has been lifted off of Long Leaf Lumber 4-6-0 #400; allowing better access to the engine.

Nice photos. This site is significant because it is one of a very few places where people have grasped the concept of saving and interpreting a whole historic site in situ. The more usual idea would be to haul out the engines and some rolling stock to another existing museum. or to save a few pieces and create a new museum somewhere else in a new building. There are still a handful of other places in North America that have the same potential as this Louisiana site, but discussing them usually just brings out negative comments from the usual curmudgeons.
