There were steam engines before there were railroads. The vertical "beam engines" used to pump coal and tin mines in Devonshire,England date to about 1800. The Stockton and Darlington Railway
was an early user of steam locomotives. Their "Locomotion" is on static display and an operating replica has been built.

Iron rails were first laid in coal and iron mines and horses were used to pull the wagons. Eventually they two systems were combined: steam power running on iron, later steel rails.

The Warther Carvings Collection in Dover, OH contains a beautiful scale history of the steam engine using scale carvings of wood and bone. After seeing an expose on Tracks Ahead, I had to see it for myself. It was truly an incredible experience. It's on par with any tourist attraction I've ever seen. I believe they have a website, but I don't recall the URL. If your in eastern Ohio or western Pennsylvania, it's well worth the side trip! Has anyone else seen it?
