From the Park Trains list, it appears that one of the Harpur-built 4-4-0s at SFOG is having its boiler gutted for installation of a diesel chain driven power plant. Previously, it was thought that this conversion would be via a diesel drive in a newly built tender. The Harpur 4-4-0s were built in the late-1960s, apparently using many of the same patterns used to construct Disneylands first two 4-4-0s. For replicas, they are attractive narrow gauge locomotives, quite similar to some built in the 1870s.

"I regret to inform everyone that the Texas is officially down for
the count......The cab has been stripped of all her piping and
jacketing, and the pan, backhead, and the top of the crown sheet
have all been cut out. It appears that an operation similar to that
of gretta will be installed, i.e. a chain drive in the firebox that
connects to the rear driver. The Texas still has no tender, the
General is now on the far side of the engine shed by Superman, where
the Texas was, and Gretta is no where to be found."

I will go by the park one noght this week and check this out. I find it hard to believe since last I heard "Six Flags Inc" could not touch the locomotives because they are owned by "Limited Partners". I heard a RUMOR to this effect over a year ago but as I last saw the Texas a month ago she was still intact.......minus the valve gear(she was partially apart for rebushing when they killed steam).
Not saying it's impossible for things to have changed...guess I just hope it is a case of misinformation. These are fine locomotives and had it not been for several factors including maintanence personal personality conflicts, lack of week day crew and an unreliable weekend crew(seems TVRM was often times more fun than the paying park job) steam would still be running. There are number of rumors going around about the condition of the boiler on the Texas, and while it is in need of some work a majority of it is purely rumor.
