As most of you are aware, our NRHS chapter, along with some non-members are
working to save the rails of the former DRGW Aspen Branch. Our monthly chapter
meeting is tomorrow evening, Wed., 2/02/05. 7:00 pm at the Glenwood Railroad
Museum, 413 7thStreet, Glenwood Springs and we will be reviewing the
past, present
and future of the Aspen Branch.

If you are in the Glenwood Springs area, I urge you to attend and
sign the petition asking
the Board of the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority to (a)
"preserve the historic railway
as it is presently constituted", and (b) "create a joint rails &
trails task force to develop
a plan that would allow both modes of transportation to share that
railway." If you are not
nearby but want to help preserve this treasure by signing our
petition, please email me
and I can fax you a petition or send it as a PDF attachment.

Of course, every one is welcome to the chapter meeting; use the west
outside stairs
to get down to the loading platform, then walk east to the big,
white, open door.

Sincerely and cordially,
Jan Girardot
Western Colo. Chapter, NRHS

Thanks to the many who requested the Rails & Trails petition; I
neglected to mention
that the RFTA Board meeting is coming up the morning of February
10th, so the more
petitions we can turn in at that time, the better.

And, a last minute reminder: our monthly chapter meeting is tonight,
Wed., 2/02/05,
7:00 pm at the Glenwood Railroad Museum, 413 7thStreet, Glenwood
Springs and we will be reviewing the past, present and future of the
Aspen Branch.

How does this effort relate or not to Greska/Ashbys' interest in a narrow-gauge operation on the branch [with the former GLRR equipment]?

I think Ashby/Greska operation on the Aspen Branch has been briefly discussed, but I'm sure they'll wait to see what happens with the track before getting too involved. It would probably be a good venue for tourism, however. This may have been discussed on the Narrow Gauge Discussion Forum, but I did not see it. They are a class act if they choose to get involved.
