From Trainorders, sounds like Big Boy 4023 got its tender drawbars cut before the recent move. Anyone else notice other damage caused by the movers? That looked like a pretty steep hill they took it up.

I attended the National Science Teachers Conference in Dallas, and had a chance to closely inspect the U.P. Big Boy, #4018. When delivered, U..P. took the expedience of cutting the pistons instead of merely removing the piston rods and placeing them in the tender for transport. This loco needs new jacketing and asbestos removal, as well as a good coat of paint. Otherwise, she is well cared for and preserved. I was told that her boiler is basically pristine, having been retubed and reflued before retirement, and never fired. The piston parts are machineable, as well as a few minor pieces of valve gear. Despite efforts to put the loco collection under shelter, politicos of Dallas feel a train shed would be incompatible with the Fair Grounds historic fabric. If a Big Boy ever does run again, and "never" is a long time, this one might be the lucky candidate. And no, there are no plans to rebuild this locomotive inspite of the film fiasco.

To add a bit about the 4018, the torched piston rods are the least of the worries. The locomotive has been sitting in the weather since whatever year before I was born, asbestos insulation makes a good sponge of sorts.....holding ALL moisture up against the exterior of the boiler shell and as a result promoting heavy oxidation. Then there are all of the other mechanical/machined areas water works it's way into and sits...and rusts.....and then the rust helps to hold in moisture for longer periods. Call it a snowball effect. The fact that the loco was retubed at the end of it's career is neither here nor there since it would have to be gutted for any operational rebuild work. At this point....all things being what they are, the 4000 in the best shape would most likely be the 4023 since(if memory serves) it was the one under cover for years after retirement in Steve's roundhouse.
Never is in fact a long time, but as more time passes there are fewer rail lines that could handle a 4000....never mind a class 1's unwillingness to allow it. As Steve Lee and I talked about during the whole movie fiasco there are few places(atleast on the UP system) that a 4000 could fit. Forget about turning it.....plan on a "loop route"....and to plan out the loop route good luck trying to find a line where signals are not to close to track center line, bridges have not been replaced that could no longer handle the load with required factor of safety and where track has not been realigned inside of tunnels.
Don't get me wrong...I would love to see one under steam, but due to the size and weight it is just not plausible ,and in many places completely impossible.
