I am used to thinking of the FEC Key West extension as the RR that Goes to Sea.
I was watching RFD channel this week. I saw part of an episode on the Alaska RR. It was discussing Portage, Alaska. Apparently the ARR passes through there on the way to somewhere.
In an earthquake in the 1960's or 1970's, the land subsided (dropped) 12 feet. The town of Portage was then abandoned. Until the ARR had a new roadbed built, the ARR had to schedule trains through the area at low tide since the tracks were under-water (Ocean) during high tide.
I'd not heard of that and I find it very interesting.
Does anyone have photos of the track as the tide came in?
Any other interesting info about tides and railroads?
It makes you wander a little about the term U-boat < grin >
Thanks
Doug
