Rare Doubleheader on Grand Canyon Railway

Last week Grand Canyon Railway ran a rare doubleheader.

Here is former LS&I 2-8-0 #29 with former CB&Q 2-8-2 #4960 a few miles north of Williams, Arizona.

I can't see the pic either, but it's even rarer because both locomotives are equipped with Lempor Exhausts. I'm pretty sure the last Lempor double-header was in South Africa in the 1980's with David Wardale's two SAR locomotives, class 19D 4-8-2 no. 2644 and class 26 4-8-4 no. 3450.

Hugh - I think you are overlooking the large number of Lempor fitted locos in the UK. I can't think of any photos off the top of my head but you can be certain at enthusiast events Lempor locos have be paired in recent times. Also whilst I don't think it happened on a passenger train I have seen photos of R711 & R766 double-heading in Oz.

Hi, Glenn,

As I remember, it was 11 cars ..... mostly streamlined stainless, with about 3 Harriman coaches in between. Each steam engine is rated for 8 cars on the line, which has significant grades near 4%. This run was arranged for photo purposes. Not sure who was doing the shooting up the line that day.

PS: as to number of psgrs, we carry about 600 per day this time of year. 300 on each train.

Glad to hear the numbers are solid! The last time we rode, it was early in the season and we had diesel. I'm glad we went!

One suggestion ... it may not be a good idea to stop the train and actually let the "bad guys" on. Just a thought ...

Seriously, I saw them the next morning at the restaurant in Williams and said, "Good morning, gentlemen." Their response was, "No one's ever called us "gentlemen" before! You sure you mean us?!?"

My wife and I had a GREAT time in the dome car. (She especially liked the air conditioning, the champagne, and the cheese.)

I don't anticipate any problems getting her out there again during steam season!

While this is my first year here at GC, I'm told that it is getting busier every year. We just added some former Budd commuter cars to our fleet. Steam ends Sept. 4th.
