Does anyone know if any of the Burlington Route GE 44-tonners have survived? I believe they were disposed of in the early-70s, but may have survived at an elevator, power plant, etc..

I know of one that was at the Camino, Placeville and Lake Tahoe (the mill and connnection line to the SP for the Michigan California Lumber Company) at Camino, California. It did get sold off when the rail connection with the SP's Placerville branch was removed. Not sure who has it, but it was sold with some spare parts. It may still be out here somewhere.

Bob and Roger,

From my best info, CB&Q 9106 (built by GE in Feburary 1941, builder's number 12951) was renumbered to BN #3 and was retired by the BN in 1971.

It was sold to Birmingham Rail & Locomotive in 1971 and then on to the Camino, Placerville & Lake Tahoe, then to to Michigan-California Lumber as their #102 in 1974.

From there, the trail goes cold.

The other 44 tonner that I haven't been able to track down is CB&Q 9104 (built February 1941, Bldr # 12949). It was assigned number 4 by BN, but as far as I can tell, it never wore it. Retired by BN in September 1970 and sold to Channen's Inc, West Burlington Iowa. Once again, cold trail.

X2200 South had a feature on the 44T GE line in issues 51 and 52. According to them:

CB&Q 9104 is b/n 12949, b/d 2/22/41 - s/f/s to Channin's Inc., W. Burlington, Iowa on 9/8/70.

CB&Q 9105 is b/n 12950, b/d 2/28/41 - s/f/s to PNC 11/4/70.

CB&Q 9106 is b/n 12951, b/d 3/6/41 - sold to CP&LT 8/31/71, lettered as Michigan-California Lumber Co 102 by 5/74.

CB&Q 9107 is b/n 12952, b/d 3/14/41 - Sold to Koppers Inc., Galesburg, Ill as their 8903.

All are phase Ib units. Old news, but something...
