The restoration of ATSF 560, 'shoe box' end cab switcher is essentially complete looking much as it did in July, 1957 when out shopped in Beloit, WI by Fairbanks-Morse. Here are some photos of this mundane locomotive in it's as built, intentionally striking, visibility paint scheme during test runs at the So. Cal. RR. Museum in Perris, CA. Reflecting the the reality of railroading in the southwest, Santa Fe would later add canvas fold up sun shades over the windshields and sliding sash to cut down on heat and glare in the cab plus hang a rerailing frog and tow chain from the frame. For F-M fans it's what's inside that intrigues-the 38D 8-1/8x10 opposed piston, 6 cylinder 1200 HP prime mover with it's 12 pistons, fuel pumps and nozzles.

I don’t think any Santa Fe H12s got the cast emblems but could be wrong depending on when they were built. Some elsewhere may have them. The bodies changed a bit over time making them easier to manufacture thus eliminating some of Loewy’s design influence. That may explain part of it. The railroad’s specs may be in play, too.

This is one of those exceptional restorations that rock the railfan world. This is a rare unit made to look supremely whole and in running order! Considering the vast number of FM's sent to the torch, this rates 10 out of 10!
