RMNE is disposing of this car. Built by Brill in 1931 for New York Central as NYC X-8015, it is the only old-style '"doodlebug" built as a detector car, and not converted from a passenger gas-electric. It served NYC until 1970 (yes, the last two years as a PC car) and was sold to Sperry in 1970 for use as a test bed car for development of new detection equipment. It was last used by Sperry in 1985, and came to RMNE in 1988. It has a Caterpillar 6-cylinder D-398 propulsion diesel. The car has a wood and canvas roof, and it needs replacement (it's tarped now). One roller-bearing truck (the power truck) and one plain-bearing truck. Has the complete interior-- galley, sleeping sections and test room, less test gear and test power gen set. Carbody condition very good.Car will have to be trucked out of current location at RMNE's Old Saybrook CT yard.No current photos available, but we may have some digital images by the end of this week. On-site inspection greatly encouraged, and can be arranged by contacting me at hpincus AT mindspring DOT com or by phone through our Thomaston office number (860-283-7245).The car needs a good home; if your group is interested and serious, call me and let's talk.

Just curious if you know what model Brill car was built from, Model 55 for example?

This is a full-size, 70 foot long car-- the equivalent of a typical Brill-built railroad gas-electric of the era. Perhaps a Brill 250 if I recall.

Yup, there ya go. Looks a wee bit different, not much though. As you might guess, the bell and class lamps did not come with the car. The steam loco-style headlight is there, as are the curved horns. I think that photo is about 1940 or so.A Google search will take one to a diagram/drawing of the car, too.
