I'm not positive, but I think N&W followed PRR practice in that tenders carried their own numbers, and were interchanged very frequently in shoppings. For that reason, I seem to recall that tenders on these two roads normally didn't carry the number of the locomotive on them, but their own number in very small stenciling instead.
