Guys and Gals, this only relates to the group in that it involves moving coal. THe series of photos is incredible. It takes a long time to download, but I found it proof that God protects fools and children. Check it out:

happened in 1979
at:Old Rooster Bridge on US-80 across the Tombigbee River at Demopolis, AL.

Pictures were suppressed (for obvious reasons) until was felt safe to release them. The towboat captain put the crew aboard the barge when they saw they were going to go thru the bridge. They could not get one cable loose and were sucked against the bridge. The captain rode it on thru (under) and was able to get the starboard engine running ... wooosh some trip!

Behold the power of Styrofoam! I bet the wasn't a clean pair of fruit of the looms to had!

I heard about this happening from some of my Alabama kinfolks when I was a kid visiting them at the Sacred Harp Singing at New Harmony. To be honest with you, I never believed it until now.

God protects the ignert and the inasent!;)

Amazing - I grew up 30 miles from where this happened, and would have been 16. When I first saw these photos a few weeks ago I immediately recognized the tug and the location, but was highly suspicious of it being a fake simply because if it had happened, that would have been BIG news in my sleepy part of the world.

Yet some old singin' Arkie knew about it? Ain't no justice in this world.

Life ain't fair, is it? I do have to admit, however, that it may have been more to do with that fact my family in Alabama wuz big time construction folks (did a lot of work for the Southern, ect. filling in trestles, ect,) and probably heard their stuff from the Hwy Dept..

PS Watch the Arkie references,Bro. Crayuft, I may have lived and worked in the Natural State, but I am a native born, sixth generation Texan!(which, this day and age, if combined with 50cents might get a cuppa coffee).

What was the name of the Tug boat? The "Unsinkable Molly Brown" perhaps?

Hehehehehe - figured that would get you fired up!

Rick, it was Warrior Gulf & Navigation's "Cahaba." (WG&N was a US Steel subsidiary much like their railroads, and existed to haul coal and ore between the Port of Mobile and a Birmingham Southern RR dock at Birmingport, AL.)
