From the OGauge Forum, there was apparently an article that said the N&W 578, plus a pair of passenger cars, were sold to Jerry Jacobson. I tried looking for said article but couldn't find it. Anybody have useful information to confirm or bust this?

Just a dumb guess: "Money talks"? And, for all we know, maybe there's a donation of said loco to VMT in the near or distant future?

That said, has VMT ever targeted this loco as a potential acquisition, and/or ever approached ORM about 578 casually or formally?

That road number brings back memories: I visited Ohio Ry. Museum in 1977, when 578 was still running, but just barely. As I recall, they had to use a Baldwin-Westinghouse electric locomotive as a helper. This was not long after the museum had rebuilt the bridge over Hwy 161, where I took some movies of the train. There were quite a few "What was that??" looks from motorists on 161. This was also when they had 4449 running there. Not the SP Daylight, of course, this was the CTA Cincinnati-built "L" car and its mate.

IIRC correctly, ORM made the locomotive available several years ago. Mr. Jacobson offered to buy the locomotive, his intention to trade it to VMT for the NKP 763. There were several members of ORM who were opposed to the locomotive leaving, even telling the local newspaper they would chain themselves to it, if it ever left. Finally, museum management at the time put the stipulation that the 578 was to go to an organization in Ohio, and could not leave the state. Mr. Jacobson made other arrangements to get the NKP 763, and life moved on.

If this rumor is true, perhaps he simply made an offer to purchase it. If true, it'll go to a good home, and give ORM some much-needed cash.

I wish I could have seen this one run, and would have enjoyed watching the reactions of the motorists going under the bridge as the steamer passed above.

There have been proposals for an interstate tourist railroad to run between Bramwell, W.Va. and Pocahontas, Va. It's too bad nothing came of this; I believe the 578 held down the run of this branch for a number of years before being reassigned to its last territory between Bluefield and Norton. I won't complain, though; she's going to a good home.

Hi Guys; Does anyone know which 2 heavyweight cars were sold with the 578? Have they been moved to the Age of Steam museum? Also, does anyone know what is the status of the ORM ex Erie / NYS&W doodlebug? is it still for sale? Thanks - Dave Notarius, London UK, ex New Hope Pa

I just passed by ORM late yesterday afternoon on my NS RR run as i do several times each week.N&W 578 and 3 maroon painted cars behind it are still sitting there. The one car i believe directly behind her is a ex PRR RPO car and i think one of the others is a N&W combo, not sure about the other car? I think all 3 cars were listed for sale on Ozark Mountain Railcar awhile back? A couple years ago they trucked out a maroon painted car with a rear observation platform as i saw that being loaded for transport by way of road.

I'll let everyone know if i see the cars or loco leave anytime soon as i go right by there on my Bellevue to Portsmouth and return RR run at least 3 times a week.

I think she was the subject of the ugliest steam engine article in Trains magazine a number of years ago.

Nope, not N&W E2 class 578, which was fairly decent-looking as Pacifics go, but the slightly earlier E/E1 class (580-599), built 1906--and some of the "ugliness" was due to post-construction modifications. February 1985 issue, if you must look for yourself.

I thought she was a nice looking pacific, would be nice to see her run again. Maybe she could be the Ohio loomotive for the new NS steam program? Dave

Of particular interest in the last YouTube clip (actually a slide show) are some shots of what appears to be an excursion of some sort with 578 and another 4-6-2. Does anybody have any details on this trip?

At one time Ohio Railway Museum had 1920s Pullman cars TIMES SQUARE and JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER. Could these be the cars that were sold?

TIMES SQUARE:
Built July 1926 to plan 3523A, 6 Compartment - 3 Drawing Room , to PRR, withdrawn from Pullman lease November, 1966

JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER:
Built January 1929 to plan 3410B, 12Sec-1 Drawing Room, to PRR, withdrawn from Pullman lease January, 1967

Times Square and Williamsport were sold and moved to Dennison by truck. Remaining on the property would be the JGW, the N&W baggage and the PRR RPO.

Minutes ago I blundered across this photo caption describing the N&W combine 1511 at ORM in the March 1963 Trains:
"'REAL JEWEL' is Ohio Railway Museum term for N&W combine 1511 acquired last August. The 1908 all-steel car still has green plush, two coal stoves; is at home behind museum's 4-6-2 578."
