Interesting to see all those engines lined up; they don't look too bad in those pics. 3377, the CNR 2-8-2, was always mentioned as a low-mileage engine in really good condition, but it seemed to not be on anyone's list for service and operation.

Considering how Steamtown continuously cannibalizes from 3377 to keep 3254 running, it's only a matter of time before their "historically accurate" mandate comes into effect and '54 is renumbered 3377.

The funny thing about '54 is that of the whole collection, she has spent more time in PA than any of the other locomotives at Steamtown except maybe #2124. I believe '54 is going on year 50 as a PA resident. #2124 spent her first 21 years in PA, then went north until 1984. That would give her about 50 years as a PA resident.

[quote="robertjohndavis"]Richard,

Thank you for sharing. Seeing these pictures made me feel like a kid again roaming a field of steam and watching films in the "movie car."

It was my favorite place on earth, and one that I begged to go to as much as possible. Even on late night drives through Bellows Falls I would ask mom to pull over at the Steamtown gate just so I could "check" on it. And she would.

These Riverside pictures are wonderful reasons to daydream back in time to when I first felt the magic.

Same here, Rob. First visit for me was in 1968 at 4 years old. Did it alter the course of my life? Yep, sure did.

Thanks for sharing the images Richard. Post some more.

I was at the Bellows Falls Steamtown location in September, 1968 and took these three transparencies. I also photographed several locomotives at the North Walpole, New Hampshire location in 1962, in B&W, which I might post later if anyone wants to see them.

In 1968 (looks like mid-year, maybe early fall, from the photos), 1293, 1246 and 89 were owned by GMRC. 1293 had operated briefly in 1964 before GMRC was under ICC juristiction (1293 did not have an ICC Form 4 at that time). 1246 did not enter operating service until fall of 1970, and was a GMRC locomotive at that time.

759 was probably out in Conneaut at the time, being returned to service; it's first trips were in late August/early September.

15 would operate again in 1973, for a few months. It was used for a private wedding charter train on the B&M in Hudson, Mass in the early spring, and it operated for the August 1973 railfan weekend. During one of those August trips, doubleheading with 1246, 15 blew a boiler tube (injuring engineer Andy Barbera) and has not operated since.

1246 and 1293 were sold by GMRC to Steamtown in 1973. 89 was sold by GMRC to Strasburg in 1972. 1293 was restored for service in 1977 on the Vermont Bi-Centennial train, at which time it became an "FRA locomotive".

Interesting to hear the different dates that the different locomotives operated between-previously I only knew which general decade each operated in, but this helped flesh things outs. In regards to 3377, I think she was one of the locomotives looked at for the Vermont Bi-Centennial train, along with 2317 and (I think) 5288. I'll have to look into that some more.

I'd be very much interested in seeing them. I don't think I've ever seen photos of Steamtown at its original location.

I forgot to put up some other photos from Steamtown in Vermont, 1968, including two of Green Mountain 89 at Chester, Vermont. (I'll put up the 1962 photos next.)

That 4-4-0 operated at the Steamtown Scranton sight, I believe once, with the 2317?.... what ever happened that prevented further use?

What has become of the former Rutland Coach pictured in the photos behind 89? I had last heard that GMRR pulled it and the combine (which you can see in the one photo, off in the distance behind the 2124's tender) from service and was going to sell or dispose of them somehow.

Finally, this looks to be a Steamtown VT era photo, specially with the CNJ cars behind it, either way, neat photo.

Great collection of photos, the 4012 looks almost new there. I had completely forgotten about the 1218 being there as well. Thank you again.

For all of about two weekends. Do a search on this forum for the word "Repton" (the name of Southern Railway 926) and you'll find the background in several different threads. along with a thread discussing more former Steamtown Vermont equipment.

She had absolutely no pulling power when it came to the DL&W/CNJ coaches they were using and the grade.

Yes, those last photos were the 1968 Vermont transparencies. The following are from Steamtown at North Walpole, New Hampshire, in 1962 (or about). From 1962-64 I was pastor of the Methodist church in North Charlestown, a few miles north of here, and often drove past the Steamtown site.

Here are three views of "Monadnock Northern" 2-8-0 No. 15 (former Rahway Valley locomotive) operating the Steamtown excursion train at Keene, New Hampshire, in 1962. I often drove through Keene between Boston University, where I was in theology school, and the church I pastored in North Charlestown, New Hampshire.

Thanks for sharing these, guys. I especially enjoy seeing old shots of the 1293 with the "Canadian" look still intact.
