Where did you see the photos?

It was passed around on a local rail fan email list; I didn't post it since it isn't mine, appears to have been taken from private property and hasn't been uploaded (as far as I know) on a site that I can link too.

The photo shows two units, one unit, with several parts missing being lifted by a crane and large pieces of perhaps the third unit in the foreground.

A CSX engineer on the local fan list reported yesterday all three units at Morgantown are gone with only a few small pieces left on the ground. A couple of flat cars were cut up as well.

Just learned from a reliable source that THEY spoke directly to the TC about the RS-1's. There are no immediate plans of scrapping anything (official Railroad response)

The Alco RS1 locomotives at Morgantown, Md. have been out of service for some time. The last unit had a crankcase explosion as the result of a spun rod bearing. Two of the locomotives are ex-Washington Terminal units, the third is unknown and was just purchased for parts.

The scrapping process has already started on the locomotives. Some parts are being harvested from the locomotives to keep oth539 powered locomotives running.

I've just received photographic confirmation of the scrapping of a total of three RS1s, three flat cars, and one scale test car at Morgantown, Md.

Sad to hear about the scrapping, but there just isn't demand for them anywhere any more.

What doesn't make sense to me is why get rid of a primary locomotive... Does TC have other power on their roster other than the S-2 and RS-3?

I am not 100% sure, but I think they are looking at EMD F7 units as replacements.

The Wellsboro & Corning was acquired by Genesee & Wyoming in 2012 - my understanding is that G&W EMDs have been pulling the passenger trains.

From what I have been told, the maintenance on the prime movers in these early alcos will financially kill you. It sounds like there is little (if any) parts support for the 539s. We have an RS1 that has not run in years. I would love to see it go to someone who will do something with it because it will only rot into the ground where it is, but fear that everybody is in the same boat. It is hard enough for our operation to maintain an EMD switcher with a B block 567, and a GE 50T so I know that this Alco will never run on our rails. Personally, I would love to see our RS1 and NW2 traded off towards a decent GP9.

It seems that now, older equipment (friction bearings) is kind of trapped where it ended up in the early to mid 1990's. That is unless somebody has deep pockets and can justify the expense of hauling something by truck or flatcar. I have heard stories of our 4-6-0 being hauled to us in the consist of a freight train. I can't even imagine that now. My how the times have changed.

Would it be possible to put a 244 or 251 in place of the 539 or is the prime mover just the tip of the iceberg?

I think that in 100 years, there will be steam running, but diesels will be parked.

The 240 had a freeze damaged engine block and I heard the 62 had wheel and/or bearing problems. I haven't heard of any problems with the 47.

This page used to show their motive power, as well as rolling stock.
