"That could include the D&H, since without that road, we likely would have lost them".

Since there have been several mentions of D&H in this thread, does anybody know what happened to the last four Alco PAs left in the United States?

Two are in Mexico, two are in the US. If you paid any attention to the Streamliners event in NC, the NKP unit was one of them

Since the topic has changed away from Shark Week...
I wonder what will happen to the Fairbanks Morse H16-66 that's locked away in Gallatin, TN?
Here's a great video of the beast:

Everything I've heard suggests that the unit is still there... But there's probably someone lurking on here that knows more than me.

I don't know if this link will work, but the Fairbanks Morse can be seen at the TVA plant on this track that loops around inside the property. It seems to be blocked in each direction by stuff piled on the tracks - in fact the yard that once handled hopper cars is now a storage yard for what seems to be some sort of construction project. If they were willing to sell it, it would probably have to be trucked out.

Phil,

Any idea what unit is next to it? Looks like a black EMD switcher,

Had to go back to the video, but I think it might be a SW1500...

Mr. Yerkes,

My comment was a tongue in cheek response to one posters comment about the fact that we owe it to D&H for there being two extant RF-16s on planet Earth. Mr. Mitchell seems to have caught that one; apparently, you did not.

I am well aware that there are 4 extant PAs, all of which were owned by D&H prior to being sold into oblivion. I am sure that D&H was aware at the time that they were the last 4 PAs, but they sold them anyway.

But what about the 5th D&H PA? Its kinda like the Pete Best of rare diesels... we usually only talk about the 4 that made it to the end! (And, yes, the 5th and 6th Reading T-1's are in same category).

I take it you mean 0783?

(I question the date given for this picture!)

I still think it's a pity the cab couldn't have been preserved as its own 'exhibit'

A sad but interesting picture. It looks like there is another PA on an adjacent track at right. Any further info or comments?

In Thomaston, a candle is lit once a year in honor of 0783.

And the track foreman has an adult beverage (all by himself) to celebrate!

(Yes, I'm joshing. About both).

But, it's still one of "the ones that got away" here in New Haven Country.

If anything looks like a S series ALCo switcher based on the size of the radiator hole, what looks to be the exhaust stack and lack of wasp waist in front of the cab.
