I received the following message from Friends of the U&D Rail Corridor. For those unaware, the Catskill Mountain Railroad is getting a unfair reaming from the current Ulster county executive.

Begin quoted message:

This year's election for County Executive will determine the future of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad Corridor.

The current County executive, Michael P. Hein, is 100% behind a trail conversion of the corridor and refuses to sit down and talk to railroad supporters.

He is being challenged by Terry Bernardo, who supports tourist railroad operations. She has stated on the record that the historic railroad tracks are key to bringing tourists into the county and we need to keep our railroad tracks in place while enhancing this asset with a parallel hiking trail.

Please help support Terry in her run for Ulster County Executive - supporting her is the only way to save the historic U&D Corridor from being converted into a trail.

We are working on a newsletter to keep everyone informed about the rail & trail situation in Ulster County on the Ulster & Delaware right of way. Please take a moment and sign up at the following link so we can keep you informed.

Because I'm not from NY, statistically speaking, how many people want the railroad to become a trail?

I don't have a headcount, but the current county executive is being an a-h about it.

Here's background:

Two major flaws I see: 1.) Without the railroad their "public resource" wouldn't exist. 2.) Rail Trails were created to preserve rail corridors that have no hope for the future, not to forcefully abandon corridors that would otherwise continue to serve their original purpose.

On Thursday, Aug. 6, Mayor Shayne Gallo announced that on Friday, Aug. 7, he will hold a City Hall press conference to address Jim Noble’s public hearing and mayoral challenger Steve Noble’s recent platform posting on the U&D rail vs. trail question.
