Truly a "nine lives" loco.

I have some conflicting information stating that is not the case. Perhaps plans will change in the future, but at the moment, it's in Altoona for maintenance only. I Would believe that until proof that they melt the cab off.

Good evening folks,

I thought I would contribute a few items myself.

I wish those persons responsible for maintaining some of the excellent online resources would update their rosters when significant changes are made.

First off, there are only seven former CNJ SD40s remaining. Sadly, the 3067 (The Red Baron) has been scrapped by Progress Rail in Chicago. EMD 2820 was part of a group of 10 SD40-45 rebuilds which were turned into razor blades approximately 2 years ago.

Secondly, First Union Rail only has one CNJ SD40 remaining on its roster.... FURX 3041 (ex CNJ 3068), which I understand may currently be on a short term lease to CSX. (with Hunter Harrison likely to join CSX in the next couple of months, I don't expect those short term lease deals to last)

FURX 3039 amd 3040 are both still around, however, they were sold to Genessee and Wyoming. To the best of my knowledge, one is currently in Ontario on one of the G&W short lines in Canada. The other has been reported to be on a G&W property in the southeast.

Helm continues to tell me that the HCLX 6067 (former CNJ 3062) remains stored at Metro-East Industries in / near St. Louis. As mentioned above, CSX still has their two former CNJ locomotives (3064, 3066). One has been rebuilt with a new cab. NS 3445 remains on the NS roster, although, I have not heard any more ECO rebuild programs coming out of Juniata as of late. I hope the jury is still out on the fate of the 3063.

Also, all 13 of the CNJ GP40Ps remain (albeit rebuilt and renumbered) on New Jersey Transit.

CNJ GP7s 1521, 1523, 1524 all remain. I'm hoping some from MOT can confirm the current status of the 1521 (ex CR 5677).

As mentioned above, the former SW7 sold to ADM should (hopefully)still remain.

Despite being listed above, CNJ 1527 and 1532 were scrapped years ago....

The only true "mystery" surrounding a possible CNJ survivor that I am aware of, and whether or not it still might exist, deals with former CNJ SW9 1091. The mystery revolves around a pair of second-hand SW9 sold to the former Patapsco and Back Rivers Railroad in Baltimore. Apparently Conrail sold a pair to the former steel hauler. One was believed to be an ex NYC unit, the other was rumored to be the 1091. However, I have found no online resource which confirms the heritage of the two units.

In addition, the P&BR is no more. Nearly all the steel mill has been removed, and while aerials photos show quite a few (7 +/-) SW switchers remaining around the old enginehouse, it is unclear exactly which units remain of a once sizable fleet. So, could one of those surviving SW units in Baltimore be the 1091? .... Maybe. Hopefully somebody might have a more detailed roster with accurate heritages of the P&BR units to share.... Obviously, the Boxcab in the B&O museum, as well as one of the two surviving CNJ steam locomotives are in Baltimore. Whether or not there is another remains the mystery.

My apologies, CNJ 1521 is the GP7 at the MOT, St. Louis. It is pretty much an empty shell now besides the engine. Both control stands, as well as all the "Jewelry" were removed by other museums who needed the parts. It still exists as of this post, but is slated for scrapping at some point in the future.

The photo I've included is from September of 2015 when the locomotive was being picked over for anything useful.

A question in regards to CNJ 1521 at MOT:

Is the DC generator still in the long-hood?

If so, could someone make some photos of how it is installed?

Information on these DC generators and how they were installed is really scarce. This would be a good documentation opportunity.
