 Post subject: K27 side rod loan

Huckleberry RR has loaned a side rod from former D&RGW K27 464 to the C&TS, to replace a broken one on 463.

How, if at all, do you repair a broken rod?
Where do new ones come from?

Generally, you don't repair one. Instead, you machine a band-new one out of appropriate steel forged billet stock in your machine shop, or in somebody else's shop equipped for the job.

Just a few questions ..
Has anyone done this lately?
What grade of steel?
What is the reduction ratio and heat treatment necessary to obtain the original toughness?
Are the forgers compensating for starting out with continuous -cast material instead of of ingot material?
Has anyone run tests on the original to see what they are aiming for; chemistry, tensile, hardness, microstructure?

Inquiring mind NEED to know ..and maybe prevent a future problem.

THe A1 Trust in England (guys making the new Pacific) just finished their connecting rods--new from scratch.

As for the rest, I'm no machinist and not at all qualified to answer.
