Our group is current rebuilding an 8.5" Westinghouse CC air compressor. Can anybody point me to information on the oversize steps for the cylinders? Happily they appear to be in serviceable shape, but it would be nice to know where this compressor has or has not had in cylinders bored out in the past. Years ago our group worked on an 11" compressor and at the time this kind of information was available on-line somewhere (Bernie Watts?) but I can't find anything now.

Thanks.

Here are the pages from the WABCO repair parts book. They recommend boring cylinders in 1/16" steps. To my knowledge, Bernie is still using the same part numbers.

Russ,

Thank you very much for this. It's exactly what I remember and what I was looking for.

The only catch is that the resolution is a bit low, and it would be nice to also have the corresponding information for the main valve cylinder. This is an "old style" compressor with a slide control valve.

In an ideal world the whole document would be out there somewhere as a .pdf ... :).

Thanks again.

We would like a copy of all technical information for rebuilding a similar unit in Maine.

I have the complete parts book for both the 8 1/2" CC and the AD governor. PM me with an email address and I can send you PDF files. They may be posted somewhere but I am not aware of it if they are.

Thank you, Russ. Sharing documents like this one makes RYPN only that much more valuable. Much appreciated.

Here are several pages, though nothing on the slide valve reversing valve. It does have both styles of main valve.

Here are several old RR standard practices. It is interesting to note where one RR called for a specific part to be held to a very tight tolerance, while the next RR was very caviler about continuing to run the same part in a very worn out condition.

We buy our parts from Bernie Watts at Backshop Enterprises, and have always gotten good service from him 303-424-6882 or http://www.backshopenterprises.com/home.html.

Kelly,

Thank you very much for all of this. Perhaps the reason that the pages don't cover the slide reversing valve is that they're concerned largely with cylinder and ring diameters, and these concepts obviously don't apply. As you say, the pages do cover the "old" built-up style of main valve and, as I understand things, it and the slide reversing valve go hand in hand (if you've got one, you must also have the other).

In any case there's plenty of interesting and helpful material on the reversing slide valve in the RR documents. If we can't work out whether our valve and its associated pieces are in acceptable condition it won't be for lack of information.

Thanks again - John
