A similar scenario to this happened in 1983 with the CB&Q depot in Galesburg, IL. The city and multiple groups wanted to save it, but the Burlington Northern started demolition work at three in the morning without notifying anyone and before anyone knew what was going on the building was too far gone to save.

Don't get me wrong--I can think of at least 50 stations around the country that were generously donated by the railroad, but I still think that railroads need to be more open to allowing groups to save historic things on their property, or at the very least give them a chance to do so.
