First, the 2-10-4: AT&SF 5000 in Amarillo, Texas, though local preservationists are fighting it:

There's at least one more Reading SW1001 kicking around... NS #2102 was the Juniata switcher two weeks ago. She shows signs of some recent TLC (including LED ditch lights) but I would expect she'll find her way to the auction block soon, as well. Hopefully there's a future for them beyond the bone yard.

I suspect there might be more to the story as to why the city of Amarillo wants to sell the 2-10-4. The explanation that people have offered to buy it in the past does not sound convincing. What price has the City placed on it?

I'm not about to register with the City of Amarillo's web site to view it, but the link to the RFP is here:

I have received both RFP's from the City of Amarillo. Neither of them were specific as to what they really wanted to see done with the locomotive. No mention was made of purchasing the locomotive. It was all about preservation, maintainence and display of it. The RFP was very vague but full of the normal boiler plate that goes wiht such a document. I do know there is a serious rift between the city and the railroad group but as to what it is and how it is being delt with no clue. The insurance issue is a smoke screen it is not that costly to purchase those types of policies. I am not sure why our museum received this document and will state that we are not interested in the project what ever it is. I would advise everyone that until there is more solid information about this to not speculate and stir the pot. If you dont have first hand information be quiet.

The article, which is in the public domain, raises several questions that the public might feel free to ask. Maybe the person to ask is the writer of the article. I don’t find any information on the website for the “Santa Fe 5000 Railroad Artifact Preservation Society.” I was going to register on the Amarillo website, but the process seems a bit much. I will call them tomorrow.

The Facebook site for the 5000 group is pretty comprehensive, and they have a lot of real effort invested in the 5000. Seems unfortunate that the city is scaring them like this.

Considering that the City owns the locomotive for the purpose of public display, and that the 5000 group is maintaining the locomotive, it is entirely unclear to me what the City's reasoning is with this latest news, or even what this latest news actually is.

The city of Amarillo is planning to sell "Madam Queen" and the group that is restoring her apparently has no chance of obtaining the locomotive.

Unfortunately, the article raises more questions than it answers.

Norfolk Southern retains 6 of the 12 SW1001's inherited from Conrail/Reading. Only 1 of the 6 are slated for this auction, leaving 5 survivors after she's sold off.

And at least some of these appear to have a future at NS, even if it's just as shop goats at Altoona and Roanoke.

I talked to a representative for the City of Amarillo today. I was not able to learn any details of the City’s proposal except for the fact that the City Council has never voted to sell the locomotive; and that the City did receive a proposal on the locomotive which they rejected.

In addition, I offer the following thoughts and observations:

1) I have found no information confirming that the locomotive is for sale.

2) The only source saying that the locomotive is for sale that I know of is the article linked to the OP here.

3) Without reliable verification, I do not accept any information in that article as being accurate.

4) I made several attempts to register in order to see the RFP, but have not been successful.

5) The only possible source of information about the City’s intentions regarding the locomotive is the members of the City Council.

At least with your title I know which 2-10-4 under discuscion. By the way the madam queen is on the national registry as having local significance. I have the filling in Texas but you can find it listed on the Web.

I don't know if this has been posted, I'll just leave this here......
I think it answers some of the questions on this loco but opens up a lot of new questions...
