Yes. CORRY RAILS has concluded that A-313 is an 18 Ton 1902 Climax. It was previously known that of the Climaxes which went to Alaska that one (1) was a 18 Ton Climax and the rest were 15 Ton Climaxes. It was only after comparing all the parts of A-313 with catalogs of the period was it concluded that A-313 which was sent to the gold fields at Counsel was an 18 Ton example.

The rear locomotive looks a lot like the 18 Ton A-313 except that the illustrated locomotive has the sheathing on the rear of the Cab on the OUTSIDE of the rear cab framing. I have a photo provied by CORRY R.A.I.L.S from the Estate of Keith Christensen taken before the locomotive was dismantled which clearly shows the rear cab sheathing on the INSIDE of the rear cab framing. That may have changed over the life of the locomotive but it does suggest that the rear locomotive was not A-313.

Also, the Side Rail of A-313 was not uniformly at the same height as on the pictured locomotive.

An interesting device on A-313 used to keep coals hot over night to fire the boiler in the morning with an Ash Dump.

Interesting detail from A-313 which illustrates how Climax secured/tied the roof arcs to the side framing. The Bolts were 1/2" or 5/8" and the Anchor is 7/8".

That looks a lot like how some Ikea furniture goes together. Great solution, had no idea it was used on railroad equipment.

The Boiler Blow Down on A-313 is through the rear boiler Washout Plug. The Plug was drilled, tapped and pipe with a valve added. The photo I have illustrating this is obscured by the floor of A-313 so I do not know how and where the Blow Down ran and terminated below the floor.

See screenshot.

Photo of Cylinder Drain Cocks on A-313. The Red Lever controls the four (4) Cylinder Drain Cocks and two additional Steam Chest Drain Cocks are located on the opposite side (Engineer's Side) controlled manually separately and all six drain into a pipe mainfold just off the bottom of the photo. All 1/4" I.D. pipe & fittings.

Well, that cross section answers one of the questions I've never been able to understand about Climax A's. Looked at a lot of photos, and it was pretty easy to understand the steam piping from the top of the "dome" or vertical boiler, across under the roof, and down to the cylinders. Clearly visible. Other than 'don't grab that, it's not a handrail!'.

But where did the exhaust steam go? I could never figure that out.

It went under the floor back to the smokebox? No wonder it doesn't show on photos!

I've even looked at the locomotive kit at Corry spread on the floor and couldn't figure that out.

The detail that impressed me looking at the actual parts was the transmission and gearshift, another place not to stick a hand or foot into under motion.

Can the gears be shifted on the fly or does the locomotive need to be stationary?

Recalling what I have read, there is no clutch, so it's best to come to a complete stop before changing gears

I've shared this with the Corry guys before.

This is Australia New South Wales in 1924, but possibly the only movie I've ever seen of a RUNNING, real, Climax A. If you can find another, post it. Remember that Climax went out of business in 1928.

And to the gear topic.... the other thing it had was a NEUTRAL.

Which explains that I actually don't think this was speeded up. This was just rolling downhill with a loaded log train, with lots of brakemen yanking on ropes and poles and handbrakes, with brakeshoe smoke, and everybody in 'pucker mode'..... roll forward to 2:50

https://youtu.be/Z8qGtAvNGO4?feature=shared

Lets see you do that with anything else but a Climax A and not call it a runaway.

In related news, Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad has acquired the world’s only surviving standard gauge Class A Climax locomotive: https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews ... -railroad/
Edit: I see that R.Hahn beat me by a few minutes to post, but I think I will leave this on this long thread.

Preliminary drawing of plumbing of the 3/4" Penberthy Injector on A-313. The plumbing between the "blue" fittings has been found in one piece. The drawing is based upon a photograph and should be considered an illustration. The only "period" fittings are the "tees", the balance are modern temporary substitutes (particularly the valves).

The Penberthy Injector is a solid model prepared from scaled photograhs and modern literature. The other type of Injector TBD after looking at the number of injectors CORRY RAILS retrieved from Alaska and comparing with a photo in which it is partly obscured.
