Long-disused Grand Canyon Railway MLW FPA4's 6773 and 6871, both still in green GCRY paint but with fresh reporting marks for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR in Ohio spray-painted on them, were set out on the line's interchange track for pick-up to head east on Monday.
Reports indicate/suggest that release of the other FPA4s to the CVL will occur as soon as the GCRY's "new" ex-LTE/Amtrak F40FH rebuild is road-tested and certain inspections, payment, etc. occur.

Sad to see the 6773 go. I spent many a day behind the throttle while doubleheading with No. 18 back in the early days of the GCRY. Both locomotives at full throttle (steam and diesel) charging the hill past Anita with a long train was pretty impressive.

On July 9, 1999, the other morning hostler & I returned to the shop after firing up 4960 and backing that day's train to the depot.

We would then wait to see what we were to do with our last 3 hours of the shift.

On this day, we had unique duty. One of the B units had flat spots and we were to operate it within yard limits with abrasive shoes to see if the defect could be eliminated.

Jeff got on the side with the hostler controls and I stood opposite him on the other side of the block. We couldn't hear much, but could signal each other. This worked out ok, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, working the engine against her brakes.

One of the foreman came out and looked at the progress and asked if we'd be willing to work OT so that the Alco could return to service.

We did and enough material had been removed so that the flat spots were gone. A long day with 6871.
