The thread about Vulcan started me thinking. I remember seeing a photo of a Vulcan logging locomotive. I think it had small truck mounted cylinders? Was there such a thing or was I dreaming?

You are thinking of Vulcan's Duplex locomotive. During the early 1930s, this company made several locomotives as their answer to the various geared types. These were called the Duplex and they did indeed have two four wheel trucks each with two cylinders and no gears whatever. They were intended for logging and mining usage but, unfortunately, came at a time when there was no longer great demand for steam locomotives for these purposes and only seven were made. A profusely illustrated article appeared in "Railroading", July 1971.

Tom,

Tried to find a clear prototype photo of the Duplex, but no luck. The photo below is an advert from Pacific Fast Mail. They built HO scale models of the Vulcan Duplex. The arrangement of cylinders and rods (no gears) is clearly shown in the model.

It's probably safe to say PFM's version was a much better seller than Vulcan's original.
