I hear they have trains there, might want to check them out. Sorry... But really I was really impressed with the Allegheny Portage historic site. Give it a looksee.

YOu should also go visit the Gallitzin Tunnels which are very close to the curve. Good train watching with a restored PRR caboose.

There are lots of good train watching locations that don't involve trespassing on NSC's property. Gallitzin has the cabin car at the West end of the tunnel with a bridge over the tracks; Cresson has a public viewing area; the Cresson Inn has a porch. I think either Lilly or Cassandra has a public viewing area too. PA route 53 has a few bridges over the West Slope.

The NPS Allegheny Portage RR site at Cresson Summit tells the story of the pioneering canal/RR system that was the only route to the Ohio River for 15 years.

In Altoona proper is the Railroaders' Museum - see http://www.railroadcity.com/.

There are also several bridges across the NSC ex-PRR main line near the Amtrak station.

In Altoona, follow 4th Avenue east along the north side of the tracks toward East Altoona and see what's stored out in the open along the way. Just past the large shop billboard sign is the Erecting Hall. Make the first right turn after the Erecting Hall, pull over along the old iron fence at the turntable, and see what's stored on the tracks between the turntable and the Erecting Hall doors.

At Cresson, go south on PA 53, about one mile west of the US 22 interchange, and check out Carney's crossing (Carney's Crossing Road), which is one of only two grade crossings between Altoona and Johnstown.

Two miles farther west along PA 53, at Cassandra, the railfan bridge at the east end of the deep cut is accessible from residential streets on the north side of the tracks.
