Post subject: L A trucking company?
PostPosted: Sun Dec 28, 2003 9:05 pm

Was recently talking with a California cousin, who spoke of a heavy duty trucking firm near where he lived in Huntington Park, Cal. in the early 1940s. This company, named Bellview or Bellieu or something like that, had a saddletank steam locomotive on their property until WW2, that he and other kids used to play on. I'm wondering if this was the ex-CRI&P 0-4-0T now at Jamestown?

This trucking company apparently was the only one in the LA area at the time with the capability to haul very heavy overweight loads, such as big generators, ship engines, etc.. Does this ring any bells with anyone? Was it the company that moved engines to Travel Town in Griffith Park?

The trucking that brought most of the early equipment to Travel Town is spelled Belyea and is undoubtly the one you are thinking of.

We have 3 0-4-0Ts at Travel Town, but none of them were sitting in their yard prior to WW2.

Congratulations to all at Travel Town on the opening of the new locomotive pavillion. I stopped by Friday to have a look, it's quite an impressive structure!

I was surprised to see it fenced off, even though it looks done. When is it scheduled to open to the public?

It will be great to see a good portion of the collection finally under cover.

I wish I could tell you when the construction fencing will be down. I know there are some punch list items that the contractor has to complete, including some roof leaks. But why they are keeping the public out I don't understand. I suspect it is partially because we don't have any fencing around the "bone yard" area now, and it was easier for the City Staff to put the old fencing back up. That and any fencing around the parts stockpile would be in the way of some of the material the contractor still has to clean up.
