Towards the end of March 2024, I stumbled across a number of journals of the New Zealand Model Railway Guild. One of these, the March 2021 edition, included a pictorial article about J1211 North British 4-8-2 Locomotive No. 24534 of 1939.

40 No. 4-8-2 locomotives which were built in 1939 by the North British Locomotive Company and became the New Zealand Railways (NZR) J class.

The CNR U-1f 4-8-2's (MLW 1944-1945) had similar nose casings which were later removed. 6060 had an extended career handling fantrips.

Interesting that such similar-looking engines would operate on opposite sides of the Earth, although still in the Commonwealth.

Yes, Phil

Especially as the locomotives were not sourced from the same builders.

Perhaps the design of one was based on the design of the other?

Best wishes

The CNR engines are substantially larger than their NZGR counterparts. CN is 1435 mm gauge (4' 8 1/2") while NZR is 1067 mm (3' 6") and the engines are proportional to their gauges. The U-1f is 93 ft long while the J is 66 ft 11 in long.

Both the NZ and Canadian engines included both oil and coal-fired engines and all have Vanderbilt tenders
