Technically the tank is an ex N&W one that that was used behind several locomotives, including NKP 759. It is at Steamtown, with (I belive) the NKP-style "High Iron Company" lettering visible through all of the rust. Maybe Mr. Rowland can key us in.

I tend to think the ex N&W tank would look nice in Roanoke behind the 1218.

There is a larger, and much more authentic piece of D&H steam left. The aux tank for CP 2816 is from an ex D&H 4-6-6-4.

There were a few of the D&H welded 4-8-4/4-6-6-4 tenders around the railroad into the mid-70s, used for fuel oil transport.

Yes, the weather was really ghastly that weekend for photography; the last shot of the day for me northbound was at Chazy, NY, just below the border, and it was exposed at
f/2 (wide open) with the Nikon's back open for 30 seconds. The 4x5 was worthless by then, having a f/4.5 max lens opening.

If anyone is interested, I will try to dig around next week for some images from that trip and will post them.

And, contrary to popular belief, I did not acquire my 'stache until a couple more years into the 70s, man.

Sorry, all I can recall is that aux. tender being in our stable for a short while in the late 60's-early 70's and then we upgraded to tenders with more capacity and it left us.

Perhaps Wes Camp or Mr. Muldowney kept better records and can provide more history??

From what I recall, the N&W aux tender first appeared on the GSCL trip in May 1969. It was generally used for 2-day 759 trips, and went with 759 to Steamtown/Riverside in Aug 1971, for the "first retirement".

Have to check pics (can't now, away from home base this weekend at the Big E Show), but I think the HICO aux tank was sent to NJ to connect with 2102 in spring 1972 for the CNJ-RDG-B&O Royal Blue trip.

The N&W tank at Steamtown, ex-Hi Iron Company, was an N&W 15,000 gallon tender that was aquired out of maintenance of way service. All of the N&W steam era "canteens" were rebuilds of 16,000 gallon tenders, which were slightly taller. The top of the coal board area was rolled to match the rest of the tank. The M of W tenders simply had the coal boards cut off, as is the case here.

Yes, it would look good in Roanoke, but behind M2 1118 when we get to restoring it. We made inquiries as to its availability a couple of years ago. No response has been made to us.
