History and Development of the 567 Series General Motors Locomotive Engine by E. W. Kettering

I finally found a copy of this very rare book through inter-library loan. No copy on the internet. Here it is for you preservation folks that work on GM locomotives. If you are into technical books that cover the challenges of new technology, this one is for you.









We are lucky that Kettering had the wisdom to document this story.

I have scanned it cover to cover. Having been out of print since 1951 - 62 years - I doubt that anyone involved with the publication is still alive and suspect that the ASME doesn't know that they ever published it.

If the forum is ok with it - I'll post the entire booklet. The trial and error story is fascinating, and shows that engineering is much more than just theory. When theory meets reality, reality wins every time and classroom teaching can never replace real-world experience.

Don't say that anywhere near anyone who was with F-M in early in their locomotive-building adventures! You'd have to run and hide.

PS: This may be one of the best things to appear on this site in a while and that's saying a lot because this is a great site. Without getting anyone or the site into copyright trouble and so long as the site owners don't mind the storage and bandwidth costs I would encourage similar things of historic interest to be posted. There may be more efficient ways to do it (the right kind of efficient pdfs) but this is fine for now.

As Mr. Spock of Star Trek would say, "Fascinating". Please continue the story when you can. We take it for granted that locomotives are sturdy and reliable, and need to know the long and sometimes painful journey toward designing a machine that will work for years, and even decades (yesterday I rode an excursion train powered by two EMD GP-35 units--still running after almost 50 years.)

Wow, GM spent a ton of money on test engines - many test engines - to perform basic research into piston, cylinder liner, connecting rod and cylinder head design.

The whole book is scanned but I still have to post it to my Facebook page before I can link it here. I completely agree - it is a very interesting read but it takes a while because Facebook runs pretty slow - at least for my computer.
