A friend of mine who volunteers the Museum of Transport is on a volunteer crew assigned to cosmetically restoring B&O 4-6-0 No. 173. The Museum acquired her from the Purdue collection many years ago and apparently she arrived without injectors. I looked at a video of 305 being moved into the B&O Museum and she has pumps driven off of the 3rd driver crankpin. 173 had a different arrangement.
If anyone has a photo of the 173 with her original injectors, perhaps replicas could be fabricated.

She's old enough to have had crosshead pumps instead of injectors

According to "B&O Power", the 173 was modernized in the 1890s, lasting in service to just about the turn of the century. While she may have been build with pumps activated by the running gear, it likely was retired with injectors.

I suggest contacting the B&O Museum with regard to their research. I know in the early 2000s, they visited MOT to examine the 173, as part of building the file on the restoration of their Davis Camel.

If I had to hazard a guess, I bet it had either Sellers injectors or Hancock inspirators, both of the lifting variety.

If I recall correctly, the position of the injectors indicate they were non-lifting. The piping shows they were mounted on the side of the firebox, just behind the rear driver set. The locomotive arrived at the NMOT (Yes, the name has recently been changed back to National Museum of Transport) without injectors- photos confirm this.

I found this photo of 173 online, the injector is there but it is hard to make out any detail-can any of you experts out there identify it? It was taken sometime post-1884, but likely before the upgrades were made in the 1890's.

I still think they are lifting injectors in a non-lifting role. The Chinese were known to do this.

The B&O had a couple of grasshopper Locomotives in service until around 1890.
