Thanks for the article and photos of the Artrain, which included this caboose. Would really be wonderful if the folks there in Shirley put the painted New York Central System oval herald and the reporting marks (NYC 17646) back on the caboose to finish up the restoration. All the hard work has already been done and this would really be the finishing touch.

It appears that the photo of CCC&StL caboose #179 was taken when that caboose was brand new. Sure would be nice if another Big Four caboose WAS preserved somewhere. We can always hope!

They lettered it this year. The firetruck was from the NYC (now Amtrak) Beach Grove shop, restored by a volunteer firefighter from Shirley:

Thanks for the photos of the restored CCC&StL wood caboose there at Shirley, Indiana. The folks there really did a nice restoration and lettering job on what is probably the only Big Four caboose that still survives. The New York Central fire truck is neat too!
