Saturday, 5/5/07

Phoenicia - Engine 29 Repaint

On Saturday, May 5th, George Liucci will be leading a crew painting Engine 29 in Phoenicia. Plans are to finish the application of primer this weekend. George plans to begin at 10:30am and could use extra help.

Phoenicia Track Crew

From Jason DiTolla:

"This Saturday, The Phoenicia Track Crew, led by Foreman George Peck, will again be working on the operating section in preparation of the upcoming season. Our projects this week include finishing the tie installations on the MP 26 curve, as well as shoring up the culvert on the east end of the curve. If time allows, we will also clean out a culvert that is between MP 26 and campground curve. We will be meeting in the Phoenicia Yard at 9am and encourage all that are available to join us during this work session. We will be taking the Work Train and Gradall with us as well... ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!

We also plan on working on Sunday May 6th to help finish up some smaller projects before the season starts. Anyone who wishes to join us on Sunday can meet us in Phoenicia Yard anytime after 10am.

Remember, only 4 weeks left until start-up of the 2007 season. ALL HELP IN PHOENICIA IS ENCOURAGED!!!!"

Jason DiTolla

Kingston

On Saturday, May 5th, I will be leading a brush crew cutting back brush at the Holiday Inn in Kingston in anticipation of the spraying of this section of the line at the end of the month. We will need to cut all trees and brush within 3 feet of the ties so the spray truck can fully extend its boom. We also must move brush previously cut at least 7 feet off the ties so that the spray can reach the new growth. Members who have powered brush cutting equipment are especially encouraged to bring these, in addition to loppers and chain saws. We plan to start between 9:30am and 10am. Please park in the Holiday Inn parking lot near Picnic Pizza.

Sunday, May 6th

The Cornell Street shops will be open at 9:30am on Sunday. Plans are to continue work on the dump truck, painting the 401, and any finish-up items on the flat car.

As stated above, the Phoenicia Track Crew plan on working on Sunday May 6th to help finish up some smaller projects before the season starts. Anyone who wishes to join them on Sunday can meet them in Phoenicia Yard anytime after 10am.

Your a smart man. I hope you get all the help you can use and more.
If other museums used your method to bring out workers there would be a lot less" where have all the volunteers gone" cries being heard around the country.

Dave,

Not smart, but methodical. We have steadily kept the railfan community in the loop on our progress, and I think word has gotten out beyond hard core railfans to a wider group who are fond of trains, but not necessesarily railfans.

Our volunteer base has increased from 40 at the end of 2005 to 88 today, of whom all but a dozen or so are active. Many of our new members are in the "fond of trains" category, which as you know is a much larger swath of the public than pure railfans.

The main thing is to remember there are many more people out there than groups may realize who have the desire and the time to help. They may end up being people you would least expect to be interested in helping out.

The internet is an amazing medium, both through forums like this and through posting photos on other sites, to attract volunteers, who are the lifeblood of the railroad preservation movement.

On Saturday, May 5th, we had three crews working:

Kingston - Brush Crew

Today, Saturday, May 5th, the main brush crew worked in Kingston all a long the tracks next to the Holiday Inn. This section of the line has been cleared about seven feet off the tie, wide enough for the spray truck. We left the pine trees planted by the Holiday Inn for now until we bring full size trains through this section of the line.

The crew in Kingston consisted of Chris Bigham, Ron Epstein, Ed Palmatier, Thom Johnson, Bob Blake and myself.

After we reached the end of the Holiday Inn parking lot, we moved to the Thruway area and did some cutting there, taking a few more trees and stumps down near C-9, and a large number of trees on the east side of the Thruway.

Phoenicia - Engine 29 Repaint Crew

Work report from George, Liucci, for Saturday, May 5th:

"HI ERNIE! WE HAD A TRIPLE A DAY, AL HOWES, AL JOHNSON, AL SCHOESSOW, BILL KABA, DICK WILHELM, JOHN PRESTOPINO,NEIL ISABELLE AND MYSELF COMPLETED THE PRIMING OF THE SHEET METAL. WE HAVE SOME SMALL SPOTS TO TOUCH UP. AL JOHNSON HAS COMPLETED ABOUT HALF OF THE MAIN FRAME. WE HOPE TO START PAINTING NEXT WEEK. PRAY FOR GOOD WEATHER. TALK TO YOU SOON GEORGE"

Phoenicia - Phoenicia Track Crew:

From Jason DiTolla:

"On Saturday, May 5th, the Phoenicia Track Crew installed, spiked and tamped the remaining ties at MP 26 and installed, spiked and tamped and additional 3 ties. Also, We completed work on the culvert at MP 25.85. Our crew consisted of Foreman George Peck, Dave Mason, Derek Stapleton, Jason Markowitz, John Isaksen, Gregory Peck, Harry Jameson and myself. We did not make our way to MP23.3 to start preliminary work there, as it was deemed unnecessary as we do not have enough materials on site to complete the job. This project will be accomplished at a later date.

On Sunday, May 6th, The Phoenicia Track Crew returned to Phoenicia Yard to work on the Maintenance of Way Equipment and CMRR #1. The crew consisted of George Peck and Myself. Terry W. did stop by briefly to see how we were doing. We installed the 2 rebuilt turntable pistons on the Ballast Regulator and determined that the other 2 pistons will need to be rebuilt in the not so distant future. Minor repairs were made to our JD410 Backhoe, and I started greasing and checking over CMRR #1 for the upcoming revenue season.

All in All a VERY productive weekend for the PTG!!!!!! Regards, Jason DiTolla"

On Sunday, May 6th, we had another crew working in Kingston at the Cornell Street Yard:

From Bill Brosnan:

"The list of attendees was long and distinguished and I couldn't keep track of all their names. Earl has a list that he'll relay to you. Among those that I do recall were Jeff and Walt Otto, John Patane, Bob Blake, Ernie Klopping, and Burr Hubbell.

We finished redecking the flat, CMRR #213, and started reworking the suspension on it, cleaning up the springs and replacing some components that had rusted away. We also continued the work on the dump truck and continued priming the 401 which is just about ready for it's black paint. We also evicted some hornets that had decided to move into the air horns."

Here are some photos:

On Saturday, June 2nd, I will be leading a crew cutting trees east of Andrew's lane that have been sideswiping the train in this section. This is just east of the original Mt. Pleasant station site (park at the former station parking lot). We plan to work there from 10am through lunchtime (at Russ's at 1pm). After lunch we will move up to Hummingbird Lane to do some work on opening the track from MP 29 to MP 31, an area that leads to the CMRR's quarry at MP 30.9. Please bring chainsaws, brush cutters, loppers, and a safety vest for working in the active track area.

Saturday, June 2nd

On Saturday, June 2nd, I was joined by Chris Bigham, Peter Fluchere and Ron Epstein, and we started our day helping the Phoenicia Track Crew clean the crossing at Andrew's lane, MP 24.88, which had been paved over the week by the Town:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 911127.jpg

We then cut some brush in the area and boarded the 11:15 train and went down to the current end of track at MP 23.3, where a sag has to be fixed:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 111672.jpg

We then broke for lunch. Just after lunch we helped Gladys install an air conditioner in the LV caboose at Mt. Pleasant (the CMRR's gift shop).

After that was done, we went to Hummingbird Lane, MP 29.58, and cut west of there:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 111886.jpg

We opened about 1000 feet of track that had been closed for 30 years. We hope to open the stretch from MP 29 to MP 31 for track cars this summer.

All in all we had a good day, despite some showers that cropped up during the day.

Kingston - Cornell Street - June 2nd and June 3rd

Earl Pardini had a good sized crew on both Saturday and Sunday at the CMRR's yard on Cornell Street in Kingston. They finished work on the renovated work flat, No 213, and continued work on the N5B caboose.

Saturday, June 9th:

There should be two crews working Saturday.

Phoenicia - Phoenicia Track Crew

On Saturday, the Phoenicia Track Crew will be working on repairing the sag at MP 23.3 so that the regular tourist train can resume operations east of this point to MP 22.7. This will involve placing fill and jacking, aligning, and tamping this section of track. The brush crew has been invited to join them in this important repair of the operating section of the railroad. The goal is to have the track repaired so the tourist train can use the line east of 23.3 after this Saturday.

The Phoenicia track crew will leave Phoenicia station between 9am and 9:30am. They will be receiving a shipment of ties in the morning, and could use help unloading them. If you miss the train, go to the northern end of Cold Brook Road (the road where Cold Brook Station is located), park there and walk a short distance west to 23.3. Bring your own lunch if you plan to ride the train, as it will not be returning to Phoenicia until the end of the day.

If there is extra time, the brush crew will work to widen the line from MP 23.3 to Cold Brook Station, MP 22.1. The Phoenicia Track Crew plans to safety tie this section of the line this summer, so brush and trees should be cleared wide enough for full sized trains to pass.

Kingston - Cornell Street Yard

On Saturday, June 9th, Earl Pardini will be leading a crew in the Cornell Street yard working on renovating the N5B caboose, finishing work on the flat, installing the container on the flat, and cleaning parts for the new switch. They will meet around 9:00am. They will be also be receiving a delivery of ties Saturday morning and could use help in unloading them.

Sunday, June 10th:

Kingston - Cornell Street Yard. On Sunday, June 10th, Earl Pardini will again be leading a crew in the Cornell Street yard working on renovating the N5B caboose, finishing work on the flat, installing the container on the flat, cleaning parts for the new switch, and finishing the hi-rail dump truck. They will meet around 9:30am.

Kingston weather is expected to be sunny both days, with a high of 81 on Saturday and 78 on Sunday. Phoenicia should be a bit cooler.

Yesterday we had three work gangs working out of Phoenicia.

The first, consisting of Neil and Kathy Isabelle, were working on the section house roof, replacing the shingles on the north side.

The second group, consisting of Dick Wilhelm, Jason Markowitz and Al Howes, worked on repairing the tie handler in the Phoenicia Yard.

The third group set out to repair the dip in the tracks at MP 23.3. Before leaving Phoenicia, they unloaded several hundred ties destined for the main line and the expansion of the operating section of the line east of MP 22.7.

About 10:45, the work train, which consisted of the Duck, a side dump with stone, a work flat and the transfer cabooose, set out for MP 23.3. The crew consisted of George Peck, George Cook, Jason DiTolla, Bill Brosnan, Derek Stapleton, Tom Healy, Peter Fluchere, John Isaksen, Ron Epstein, Dave Baker, newcomer Mike Hatton and myself.

We jacked, dropped stone, and tamped the worst part of the dip at MP 23.3, though we will need to come back next week to finish the job.

Here are some photos from yesterday:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 628389.jpg

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 028439.jpg

After we finished, we took the work train to the end of serviceable track, MP 22.7:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 728487.jpg

We then walked to the Boiceville Bridge, MP 21.3. We surveyed the route to get a sense of the brushcutting and tie replacements involved in working on this section. We also looked at the missing timbers at the Boiceville Bridge:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 828507.jpg

All in all, everyone had a great time.

There should be two crews working Saturday. Plans are the same as last weekend.

Phoenicia - Phoenicia Track Crew

On Saturday, the Phoenicia Track Crew will continue repairing the sag at MP 23.3 so that the regular tourist train can resume operations east of this point to MP 22.7. This will involve placing more fill and jacking, aligning, and tamping this section of track. Because of the work done last weekend, we should be able to finish this section this weekend. As before, the brush crew has been invited to join them in this important repair of the operating section of the railroad.

The Phoenicia track crew will leave Phoenicia station between 9 and 9:30am. If you miss the train, go to the northern end of Cold Brook Road (the road where Cold Brook Station is located), park in the small lot there and walk a short distance west to 23.3.

Kingston - Cornell Street Yard

On Saturday, June 16th, Earl Pardini will be leading a crew in the Cornell Street yard working on renovating the N5B caboose, finishing work on the flat and container, and preparing to move the fence. They will meet around 9:00am.

From Burr Hubbell:

Cornell Street Yard was running full blast on June 10 under the direction of Earl Pardini. Volunteers present included John LaBarre, Walt & Jeff Otto, John, George Cook, Greg Vaughn, Burr Hubbell, John Patane, & Raphael.
CMRR entered the 21st Century with its first intermodal load. Final repairs were made to the LCL container and it was set on the flat car, ready for use. Greg Vaughn worked on handrails for the front end.
Greg Vaughn also showed up with a remarkable set of equipment - a complete forge and sand box which will allow us to do our own babbitt castings!
Work continued on the dump truck, which is very close to being done.
Our newest volunteer, Raphael, spent his third week stripping out the floor of the caboose. He finds better ways to do things each week and gets more and more accomplished!
Next week plans are to build a panel track for the Davenport 0-4-0 frame and the tamper as we now have room for those projects.
Work to be done this year includes:
-- Finishing Caboose & Flatcar modifications (5 mos to opening day)
-- Trackwork - to begin in a couple of weeks on Saturdays
-- Moving Fence
-- Building new siding & moving cars back from 209
-- Begin rebuild of Davenport
BH

Saturday, June 23rd:

On Saturday, June 23rd, the Brush Crew and the Phoenicia Track Crew will be working together at MP 22.7 at the end of track near Cold Brook. The purpose will be cutting trees and other preparation work for tie replacements in this section later in the summer. We will work from there to Cold Brook Station.

I will be leading the Brush Crew and we will meet at MP 22.7 at 10am. Please park at the northern end of Cold Brook Road at the lot where we have been parking the last two weekends and walk down to 22.7 (the red stop sign) which is about 500 feet south (railroad east). Bring chainsaws and clippers. We will be having lunch at Russ's at 1pm, and after lunch may do some cutting on the operating section or west of Hummingbird Lane along Herdman Road.

The Phoenicia Track Crew plan to meet at 9am in Phoenicia, and will bring either the work train or other equipment down to MP 22.7, planning to meet us there at 10am. If you want to come down on the work train, please go to Phoenicia at 9am.

There will be no work in Kingston on Saturday.

Sunday, June 24th:

On Cornell Street in Kingston, Earl Pardini will be leading a crew continuing restoration work on the dump truck, the container and flat, the N5B caboose and the Davenport 0-4-0. They will begin work at 9:30am.

Saturday, June 30th.

There are tentative plans for Saturday, June 30th for Tom Healy to lead a crew clearing the track of new growth from Pine Hill to Highmount in preparation for the NARCOA run there on July 6th and 7th. More will be posted next week.

Yesterday, we had two crews working, one in Phoenicia, and another brush cutting along the line.

Phoenicia

In Phoenicia, Al Howes has almost finished work on Engine 29, which only needs its safety striping and some cleaning of the trucks.

Tom Healy led a crew in Phoenicia which included Al Howes and Richard Wilhelm finishing work on all our maintenance of way equipment in preparation for our upcoming track repair blitz to get to Cold Brook Station, MP 22.16, from our current end of track at MP 22.72. Tom writes:

"We are back in Business in Phoenicia with the track equipment. The Ballast regulator, tie handler, gradall, and now the scarifier/tie inserter is all now 100% ready on the siding. So pass this along, prepare for a track blitz towards coldbrook soon in the next few weeks After we prep the section down to cold brook station."

Brush Crew

The Brush crew started the day at MP 22.72, the current end of track, and worked to cut back overhanging trees from the ROW from MP 22.72 to about MP 22.5. We cut most of these trees in prepration for track work to begin in July. The crew consisted of Peter Fluchere, Ron Epstein, Bill Brosnan, John Patane, John Prestopino, Joe Marsh, Bob Blake, and myself. A few photos:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 225143.jpg

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 625170.jpg

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 425234.jpg

After lunch we went to Herdman Road and continued cutting west from MP 29.78, where we stopped last time, to MP 29.9. It was pretty thick through this section, but started lightening up towards 29.9. Some photos from this session:

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 225278.jpg

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 025299.jpg

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 025366.jpg

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 625405.jpg

http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... 625456.jpg

This section has not had any maintenance in 30 years, and we would like to open it up for track cars this summer. It will enable us to access the railroad-owned quarry at MP 30.9, and gives us a project near Phoenicia to work on in between other projects.

Saturday, June 30th

On Saturday, June 30th, all volunteers will be meeting in Phoenicia between 9 and 10am. There will be at least two crews working out of Phoenicia.

George Peck will be leading a crew working on repairing the track maintenance equipment in Phoenicia and preparing for the upcoming tie replacement blitz to get to Cold Brook Station. George plans to start by 9am.

Tom Healy will be leading another crew going down to the reservoir to clear the track in preparation for the NARCOA run on July 8th. He and Joe Marsh will be bringing their track cars, and they will be bringing the big gang flat along for equipment and extra seating. Tom is planning to leave about 10am from the Phoenicia yard, but try to get there by 9:30am for a job safety briefing and other preparations. This run is especially encouraged for those who have never been on this section of the line. Bring picks, shovels, loppers and weed wackers, and your lunch as they will be eating on the reservoir. Those running late should park at Mt. Pleasant or Cold Brook and catch Tom's train there.

Sunday, July 1st

Earl Pardini will be leading a crew on Sunday, July 1st at the Cornell Street yard, continuing work on the dump truck, the caboose, the Davenport 0-4-0, and preparing to move the fence to expand the yard. He will be starting at 9:30am.

Upcoming Weekends

Until the Phoenicia Crew is ready to start tie replacements to Cold Brook, tentative plans are to go to Pine Hill on July 7th to do a maintenance run from Giggle Hollow to Highmount, and go to West Hurley to do a maintenance run from MP 6 to 16 on July 14th. These plans are preliminary and subject to change.
